  • Our pass efficiency rating (PER) on 1st down ranks 24th nationally, while we're 111th on 2nd down and 109th on 3rd down.
  • On 3rd-down runs, we're averaging under 1 yard per carry (114th nationally). Combined with our passing futility on 3rd down, it's easy to see why we're 119th in 3rd-down conversion efficiency.
  • Of our 14 offensive TDs, 11 were scored on 1st down (1 TD every 16 plays). On all other downs, we've scored 1 TD every 77 plays.
  • Not shown above but Tennessee has had just 1 play from scrimmage go for 40+ yards, fewer than any other SEC team. Sans UT, the conference average is 7 plays of 40+ yards.

1st down pass efficiency is misleading because we rarely ever throw a 1st down pass

The short-short version.

When you have a bad Qb, the best down to throw on is 1st down.

I agree, those stats are offensive. We have to make some changes somewhere.
And nothing that we all didn’t already know.
No stats needed to know we have about the least offensive team in football.
If it were golf , well we would be the tiger woods of football

Even given JG's limitations, I'd still like to see us throw on 1st down 40-45% of the time. So far this year, we've passed 34% of the time on 1st down (58 times), 41% on 2nd down (54), 53% on 3rd down (45), and 38% on 4th down (6).

So short of it is our o line thinks holes are only for donuts and the qb needs glasses to see 40+ yrds.

Anyone on the defensive side of the ball we can fire?

The absolute hot garbage QB #2 may have something to do with it.

What gets me with the play calling. They treat JG like a true freshman. They send in JT Shrout and his first play is a 3rd and 18. The OC calls a 25 yard pass that was intercepted. I'm no JT fan but the same is happening with the other back ups their taking chances with them that they don't take with JG. Almost like their setting them up to fail.
