Some caller said Hurd should be a TE

I had to go ahead and look it up. It's worse than I thought in terms of his lack of homerun-type runs. He's played in 26 games, he's got 5, just 5! rushes of more than 30 yards. Elite RB's get that many 30+ yard runs in 2 or 3 games.

Good back, solid back, maybe the best short/tough yardage runner in the league, but average at best in terms of speed and game-breaking skills.

Kinda like Emmitt Smith and Terrell Davis, huh? :)

No fan base internets better than the Vols

No fan base phone calls worse than the Vols.

This 100%. I was listening to the sports animal about six or seven years ago after a missed last second field goal and a loss. Some knot head called in and asked why we didn't kick on third down so if we missed we could kick it again on fourth down.

Um, not at all, and you're making my point even further. Emmitt Smith still holds the Florida record for longest run and longest TD run when he took one 96 yards. He had more runs of 30+ yards than I care to add up. Emmitt was a "homerun" hitter! Not sure about Davis, you can do that research.

7 dudes on the defense would catch Hurd before he took one 96 yards. Hell, I'm looking for him to take one 50 yards, holler when that happens. Again, solid back, would be the man I'd hand it to on 3rd and 3, but not an elite game-breaking runner.

I'm sure that most every other team in the power 5 would like to have a weapon like Hurd. Some do, but he is the non-typical power back. Has just the right size to ram it down your throats, but also can be used in TE alignment and catch passes. If I were fielding a team, he would be first on my list!

OK, so he's slow and not an "elite game-breaking runner" in your opinion. He may not be the fastest RB on the field but he is definitely a game-breaking runner. He has gotten many critical first downs to take us down the field to score and win games with half the defense on his back. Personally, some of those elite break away speedster backs maybe would have cost games behind the line we have had the last couple years. If I owned an NFL team, I'd take him in a heartbeat. JMO

Agree, very well stated and level-headed. Solid player, nobody would turn him away, but not a Fournette/Henry/Gurley type.

DCompagnucci, your Wrong, Jalen Hurd is an Elite running back, just sit back and watch him break records this year

Only 5 runs exceeding 30 yards, none exceeding 50, after 26 games and 500 or so carries. Those are facts, not opinion. He's not slow, but he's not fast. I'd guess about 4.6 at the Combine.

UT is 16-10 since his arrival on campus, and he's never carried the Vols on his back to win a game with anything close to title implications on the line. He's lost nearly every game he's ever played against ranked teams with I guess UGA being his biggest win?

Solid, not spectacular, maybe he changes that this year.

I hope he sets all sorts of records, seems to be a great young man, never in trouble, etc.

Nobody else wants to see the guy rip-off a 65-yard TD run in a big game? That's all I'm saying. I get how valuable the tough carry for 8 yards on 2nd and 7 is, but show me more than that! Show me more explosiveness at some point, show me an open field run where NOBODY catches you from behind.

I can see Hurd rushing for 1400-1500 yds this year in the SEC, if that's not elite, I don't know what is

Emmitt never clocked higher than a 4.6...high school, college OR NFL. So you made MY point, kind sir. :). He was gifted at taking advantage of his scheme and offensive lines. Helped that he was the focus for both Galen Hall's and Jimmy Johnson's workhorse type schemes. We run more downhill offset I scheme this year and defenses can't key on the read every play and you'll see Hurd with a full head of steam already at the LOS, not fighting off fools in his own backfield. That's when you see his explosion for the unlucky fool in Florida's defensive backfield(specially the feminine Jalen).

Just like Emmitt and Terrell Davis (who clocked a 4.7)

:)

We don't share your weird concern. :loco: Why are you living in this thread? :)

MY weird concern? You're the one comparing Hurd to Emmitt Smith. 🤔😊

I'm comparing clocked speeds based on YOUR point. It's WEIRD that A GATOR FAN is so concerned about one of OUR running backs. :)

Just curious, does anyone know his longest TD run from the line of scrimmage? I have no idea, but I'd guess around 30 yards? And if he has any runs at all longer than 50, I don't remember seeing them. I'm guessing his career long run is about 45 yards.

Point is, he does not have elite speed and he has not been a homerun hitter. Think of backs like Fournette, Chubb, Henry, Gurley and others, these dudes were ripping off long TD runs about every week, 50+ yard runs all the time. Hurd is not in their league. He darn sure shouldn't be a TE, and he's an outstanding, consistent, possession type back, but he doesn't wow anyone when he gets in the open field.

Hurd wow's when he gets 5 extra yards with 3 defenders on his back. A back like Hurd wares down defenses. It is why you will see him playing in the NFL next year.

I never said those stats you put there are opinion. Your statement that he isn't an "elite back" is your opinion. That second bolded quote is utter BS. The team lost those games, not JH and I don't expect you to find an instance you can show where any play he made cost the VOLS the game. Unless you want to make an opinion on a hypothetical that if he took it to the house we would have won. I can do the same and say everyone else cost those losses by not capitalizing on the numerous first downs JH made. Take Hurd away from the VOLS and my opinion is we wouldn't have achieved the .500 mark the past 2 seasons.
