Solution to a new DC

Really? So awful they won their conference championship? That is bad...:eek:lol: I hope we never win one of those, if that's awful.

Taking a LB coaching job for Saban at Bama, as opposed to staying on at UCF in that capacity was likely viewed as a faster means to getting a DC job at a major BCS program. Thompson might have been in line to be the next DC at Bama, if he hadn't come here to learn under Monte.

Well between an 0-11 season and a 4-8 season they went 8-5. Also you need to look at the #'s of those defense's before clearly making comments about UCF defense's under Thompson. The were awfull....

Thompson isn't getting the job. If so he would have already gotten it. The truth is Lance Thompson's strengh's as a coach are Recruiting then coaching. He isn't going to be a cordinator in this conference.

Sorry.... I love the guy. But he isn't a cordinator....

3-4 requires less overall depth at DT, but you have to have a big guy that can occupy two blockers, hold the line against the run, and push the pocket.

Not necessarily. There are two types of 3-4 defense. In a 2 Gap 3-4 defense the NT has to play heads up on the center and occupy two blockers just like you said.

In a 1 Gap 3-4 defense the NT plays the edge on one gap and a blitzing linebacker takes the other gap. A 1 gap is useful if you have a "smaller" NT with good hands and good speed and want to play an attacking / aggressive style of defense.

Of course there are variations and tweaks that are applied to the 3-4 as well. If the opponent tries to expose you with 3 wide outs then you send in a 3rd CB in place of one of the OLB.

Sounds like UGA's search. Foster, Chavis, you left out Kirby Smart and onto to a NFL DL Coach.

Smart turned em down per 990...

Smart definitely turned UGA down in a very embarrassing way.

Are you saying The Vols went after Kirby Smart too and he said no?

Have you heard a report about Chavis is getting yet another raise to stay at LSU after taling to the Vols.?.

He turned UGA down and got a raise to 600k and now I'm hearing he just got another raise to 700k to stay due to the Vols talking to him.

What are you hearing up there?

I know Gary Patterson said he is staying, but what does Dick Bumpus say? His defense was in the top 15 in the country in Rushing D, Passing D and Total D. If we can bid against Clemson surely TCU is in play.

Dick Bumpass is the DC but he does not even call the defensive plays. Gary Patterson does. I think that is why you don't hear his name mentioned more.

Our other problem with switching to a 3-4 is linebackers. Tenn tends to recruit and use smaller, faster guys which you can do in a 4-3, but with a 3-4 you need bigger guys 230-240 vs. 210-220. Look at the size of alabamas backers this year, they ran a 3-4. You put backers in the size of ours with only 3 linemen infront of them and we will get run over. Again and again...,

Yea, I believe Smart was the first one they went to from reports coming out. The first to report this was Wes Rucker I believe....

I don't believe they went to Chavis. I don't think that would fly right now after him just being gone for a year and the Flumer connection.

Steele clearly backed out on us.

I could only guess who else has been contacted....

I think looking now the hire is going to have to come from the NFL. I don't see a name cordinator out there that would come from the college ranks.

There are rumblings of Joe Barry from Tampa. Hubbs also mentioned Bob Sanders who worked with Dooley at the Dolphins and has been a DC at Green Bay and was on the Bills staff this year as a DL coach. We also are hearing about Travis Jones and karl Dunbar. Both seem like great DL coaches but niether have Cordinator experience.

To me Sanders seems like the most logical choice if you look at his resume and ties to Dooley. But who knows. If it is him I don't see the holdup. Which kind of makes you wonder about Jones and Dunbar since both of there teams are still playing.

Also, I have a question for you being a Ga guy. Do you see anyway Searls would leave? There has been talk of him coming for the OL job. But I have my doubts after he didn't go to Auburn and if it is him why wait? .....

Alot of questions on the hill as you can tell.

If i remember correctly, Dunbar was thrown out there by someone who was looking at NFL coaches with ties to Dooley. There has not been an indication as to whether or not we will ever go after him. I feel that Travis Jones is the same situation. They both are great coaches and would probably do very well here but there is nothing there....at least not at this point.

I'm so tired of hearing "he has no previous experience as a coordinator" crap, you can't become a defensive coordinator until someone makes you one. Are people just born with the title of coordinator? Don't think so. If guys such as Karl Dunbar, Travis Jones, Kacy Rodgers or Joe Barry have been in the NFL for 5-10 years as position coaches, and damn good ones, I would take that experience over a Kirby Smart who's been a DC for two years and doesn't even call his own plays. UF just named George Edwards as DC, he was a DC for one year with the Redskins, that's less experience than Lance has. We need to get off this previous experience kick and realize that there's a first time for everything and you can't be a coordinator before you're a coordinator.

I`ve just now noticed the mentions of kacy rogers... looked it up and the guy has a hell of a resume`. Maybe we don`t get him as coordinator. Maybe we get him and elevate lance thompson? I ALWAYS love the idea of orange blood.

I agree with you here but there are a couple of points to consider.

First, you are spot on that somebody has to get a shot at sometime to show their mettle but given the situation we're in it would be better to have a DC that doesn't need on the job training if possible as much of our staff is already in that spot (including CD).

Second, if we can land a name DC it can only help with recruiting.

If we can't get a name and proven DC we will have to get a trainee...I just hope we can crash learn if this is the case or 2010 may be a disaster.
