Socom beta started today for folks that pre-ordered and got a code from EB/Gamestop.

If anyone else here is playing, let me know. I suspect I'll be putting in quite a few hours checking this one out this weekend. Never played the others, so I probably have a steep learning curve here. Oh well, at least it should be fun.

PSN: Dank

I'll post impressions after I get a few hours in. Currently downloading the 1.5gig install right now.

No, the game will be in stores. You can get it packaged with the new offical PS3 headset that looks pretty cool, too. If you pre-ordered at EB/Gamestop, you got access to the beta today. If you buy the June (I think it's June) edition of Qore from the PSN, you'll get access next week.

I think most stores are out of the beta codes at this time, but if you're interested, might not be a bad idea to call a few Gamestops and check.

Slow loading right now. Played a couple rounds and I'm still adjusting to the controls. I think it will be better once I get more comfy and find some friends to strategize with. Seems to just be the Crossroads map.

I think the servers will start clearing up tonight. Once I got into a game, it was no problem one round to the next. However, getting into an initial game took 5 or so minutes looking at the loading screen. Menus beforehand are also slow and having problems. Probably just the mad rush right now from everyone wanting to play.

graphics look pretty good Doc?

Not the best I've ever seen. I'd say the screenshots on IGN and gametrailers are pretty darn accurate. A bit like Counterstrike Source with darker colors. But, this map is fairly dark and drap so others might be a bit more eye-catching.

Anyone else trying to play this?

I'd love to report some more about the game, but so far, it's been a crap-fest on my end. Menus and setting up your character takes forever. So slow, although a hair better this morning than yesterday. Getting into a game takes forever. Loading up the map takes forever. Honestly, it took me 20 minutes to get into a game and at that point, I was over waiting and the game in general.

Their status screens when logging in seems to indicate high server activity and they are working on it. But, they aren't expecting things to get better until later next week.

I think I may wait a couple days before trying again. If I keep trying and having a 20+ minute wait just to get a game going, I'll end up too frustrated to keep playing and shelve it for good.

I'll continue to follow things on a couple of the boards I'm on, but I doubt I'll load it back up until I'm hearing more positive things about load/connect times.

socom on ps2's was the greatest game of all time. i think it was socom 3 that i was a fan of. clan wars, my bball team in college all had the game, and seriously during christmas break that's all we did was play socom. when school was in session we'd be at school and prac during the day. as soon as prac was over we'd run grab some food bring it back to the house, shower, and start playing clan wars. good times

a couple of the guys on the team sucked, so one of my boys would always say "thats just bad socoming"

I'm buying it for the headset. Probably just sell it if it sucks, but for $10 more that the stand alone headset....why not?

A new patch was released today. I'll probably try it out again tonight. Word is lots of the issues have gotten better. Not all, but some.

how is the game tho, like how would it stack up compared to cod4?

Completely different. Worlds apart. Obviously it's 3rd person, which is different, but SOCOM is more of a slow, methodical teamwork game. I personally perfer the more run and gun/respawn type gameplay of the typical CoD4 games but everybody likes different things. My feeling right now is that they are trying to make it too 'realistic' and it's looses some of the fun.

Personally, I think CoD4 is a heck of a lot more fun. But, I can see how some might like a deeper team-work based game that tries to be a bit more realistic. Can't really comment on graphics since there's only 1 board available right now. They are not all that impressive but it's good enough, I'd say.

Also, I think the headset looks great, too. Might get it if I end up buying SOCOM. Otherwise, my Warhawk set is working just fine.

SOCOM is a press to talk game. There's proximity chat for folks right around you, but for your whole team to hear, you have to press L2. Just trying to give some more details.

SOCOM II for the ps2 had to be my most favorite shooter game of all time - I could literally play 24 hours straight... never had so much fun on a game. I was so hit or miss with it though... sometimes I'd take out their whole team in a round and the next round I'd suck it up so I was a captain on and off - would lose the ranking quite a bit. Clan battle were also intense. But I've always sucked at sniping.
