Agreed. In the meantime, we need to not look like a dumpster fire program with our fanbase before the coaching change happens so we don’t scare away that type of coach.

I'm not buying the whole scare coaches away garbage some people talk on here. Bottom line, if you win you have nothing to worry about and you have a diehard fanbase that will throw themselves at your feet. If you lose and constantly lose due to coaching or whatever, then you shouldn't be the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers and the fanbase will rightfully eat you alive. Thats my take on things.

Exactly!!!
Has the whole world bc such a hairy vag that everything has to be perfect and easy or they quit, runaway, or never start?

Great coaches usually want to find a situation that they can make their name or boost their reputaion.
If they are scared then are they really a great coach to begin with?
I understand the idea of taking in something that is so far in the hole it's nearly impossible to come out of but that isn't tn.
Hell butch Jones accomplished that when poepl claimed it was beyond repair.
Now with some solid advantages in place (talent, facilities, upgrade to stadium coming etc..) its very atttactive
Unless you're a thin skinned crybaby but then one needs to wonder if you're really a great coach in first place

Lest we forget he was playing a team that he had built, so being Dungys team is a wash.

Not sure I follow. Gruden's short tenure with the Raiders and first season at TB are definitely the highlights of his resume. That still doesn't change the fact that following his first season at TB, he never won another playoff game as a head coach and was eventually fired.

His overall W-L record as a head coach is unimpressive, to say the least. Butch's W-L record as a head coach is actually much better. I feel like most of the posters here would be surprised to learn that.

I dont get the Gruden love myself. I would rather have Chip Kelly or Mike Leach. But if I had to pick a real homerun hire I would have to go into West Lafayette and steal Jeff Brohm or D.J. Durkin at Maryland.

OK Gentlemen I am a newbe to this board; I was not sure where to post my comment so give me a newbe break if I am in the wrong place.
I am a huge Vol fan from afar; I have actually visited Knoxville 20 years or more ago and that visit is one of the main reasons I stated following the Vols.
My confusion is this: I have always been under the impression that TN has always been a "Big Time" coaching job that great coaches want to identify with. A job like Oklahoma, TX, FSU, OSU, etc. But I look at the past and see guys like Kiffin, BJ, and Dooley. These are not Big Time coaches IMO. Hell, I had never heard of two of these guys before they were hired. If I were the AD at TN, elite coaches are all I would consider. But look at the past....does someone tie this guy's hands behind his back and dictate who he hires, or maybe he just has a different philosophy when it comes to what makes a successful coach? And even if he does, surely his last three hires would make him change his way of thinking? It just looks to me like it is not only time for a new HC, but a new AD as well. If I performed in my gig like he does, I would be looking for new work in a heart beat. I am not an idiot, but there has got to be something obvious I am missing here. I read all of your comments about we owe these past coaches so much, I get it. But this does not seem to be a fallback excuse at other major programs, so I am not able to completely buy in to this excuse. This just seems simple to me, but apparently the powers at TN just don't see it my way.
Thanks,
Shark.

Yeah, they can look-up Gruden's W-L record. It's 95-81 as a head coach, a .540 winning percentage.

But he is a celebrity and a big name. He did win a Super Bowl -- although it was in his first season in Tampa with a team that was built by Tony Dungy. He made the playoffs just 4 other times and never made it out of the first round and he was eventually fired.

People are so caught-up in this Gruden silliness that most of them haven't even bothered to really look at his resume. He's been much more successful as a TV personality.

I'll admit I had not looked up his resume. .540 - wow ... why the big fuss over him??

For some I don't think it's that he would be a great coach, but it would show that UT could go and get a high profile name without money being a hindrance.

Let's be honest. If Jon Gruden comes to TN as next head coach, would these kids "buy in" what he is saying? Who knows, but I'll guarantee that every kid KNOWS who he is.

We live in society right now where kids can "look up" names. They can look up their W-L records. They have access to what we have. What AD's probably have.

Right now, it's not about a up and comer, UNLESS they have really succeeded in a POWERHOUSE team.. Right now, it's how much of a "GENIUS" they are. OR even CELEBRITY STATUS.

Yes I said it. Celebrity Status. But lets be honest. If you were recruited by Urban Meyers, Nick Saban, Chip Kelly, or Jon Gruden. As an 18 year old... who would you go for?

There is NO 18 year old who doesn't know these names. But if you get someone who has lesser of a status, we might be in trouble.

Basically what I'm saying is.... TN HAS TO MAKE A BIG SPLASH HIRE, or we are DONE.

In order: Saban, Urban, Kelly, Gruden.

Finally.

Someone says it how it is. We need a name that everyone recognizes. But more importantly, we need to be recognized again!
