Sobering stat on JH in SEC night games

When are people going to realize that JH is not a good in-game manager/coach. Period. Good recruiter, nice guy.....but not good at the one thing he is paid to do: win on the road in the SEC. 1-18 in night games does not lie. And that's about what got James Franklin fired too.
He’s literally got 18 losses in his whole Tennessee career.

You need to consider WHO we are playing on the road at night.
Time of day doesn't matter. Who does.
Fair enough - I'll go back later this week and compile record against each and what each opponent was ranked.
I bet you are right - the skew will be towards Top 10 or top 5 teams at night on the road.

SEC Road Night Games Under Heupel (2021–2024)

Here are the road SEC games under Heupel, and which ones count (or arguably count) as “night / primetime” based on kickoff times or TV windows.

Estimation of His SEC Road Night Record (2021–2024)

  • Games that strongly qualify as “night” / primetime road SEC games(by my count):
    • 2021 @ Florida (7:30 PM) → Loss
    • 2023 @ Florida (7:00 PM) → Loss
    • 2023 @ Kentucky (7:00 PM) → Win
    • 2024 @ Arkansas (7:30 PM) → Loss
  • That gives a record of ~1 win and 3 losses in SEC road games that are clearly “evening/night.”
  • If you include more ambiguous “late afternoon / flex” games (e.g., 7:00 PM, or “flex window” games), the total number could shift slightly, but nowhere near 1–18.

Key Take-Aways

  1. Heupel does have some SEC road night losses, but only a small handful, not nearly 19.
  2. The “1–18” claim is not supported by publicly available schedules / box office data for 2021–2024.
  3. Based on this, it's much more accurate to say: Heupel’s road night SEC record is roughly 1–3 (or 1–4 at worst), depending on how “night” is defined.
Guess that's where my mantra comes from and the thing that sticks with me the most - in the 1-3 record of SEC Night games on the road:
1 loss came from a Florida team that was ranked 9th in the AP but quickly dropped the next week to end outside of the polls (CJH 1st year)
1 loss came from a Florida team that was not ranked in the AP when UT was ranked 11th
3rd loss came at Arkansas when they were not ranked and UT was ranked 4th

On the road, at night...Heupel's kryptonite.

I've been saying that for a couple of years now.
Other than Vandy and UK, he has not done well in that situation.
it's not just at night. it's on the road period. Arkansas beat the piss out of us in broad daylight.

anybody on the road not named UK or Vandy has a very good chance to beat Tennessee.

I'm a little confused at your definition of "beat the piss out of us". Does a five point win when the defense allowed you to score a TD in order to get the ball back but running out of time(and out of bounds) qualify? I assume that is the game you are referring to since that is the only time we have played at Arkansas under Heupel, although that was a night game so I'm not exactly sure what you are referring to.
Don't forget to include LSU along with UK and Vandy on that last statement. Pretty sure they never had a chance to beat Tennessee.

From Basilio:

JOSH HEUPEL is overdue to win one of these games. He's too accomplished of a coach for the following to remain true ... Josh Heupel is 1-18 in road night kickoffs at UT against the rest of the SEC outside of Vandy, Kentucky and Oklahoma last season. Something has to give here. Florida stinks. Tennessee needs a clean first half and they should be on their way. If Tennessee goes down there and slops around with penalties and unforced errors it could be a long night. Florida wants to check out.
Why does something have to give Saturday? I expect the same 'ol same 'ol.

I understand better now.

It just seemed weird because this team's future is only two games after Florida.

This season to me is either a turning point for CHH where he sees areas that need serious improvement to get to the next level or it is the beginning of the end and we will regress as a team.

I genuinely have no idea which way it will go but am 60/40 on the hopeful side. All we have to do is shore up the defense and get a top 25 defense in all areas, not even top 10 really, just top 25, and fix the special teams area and 2 minute drill play calling and he wins a natty here. His scheme will put put points on the board. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel. But we must be able to make 50 yard kicks 9/10 and we must be able to get off 3rd and long and we must be better at clock management. Fix those and we are great!

I also view a team as the freshman through seniors and the years they will be there in a floating roster that changes due to graduation etc. I care more about the coaching growth or decline that players as the coach is the constant variable.

I believe he is 2-3 against Alabama and 2-2 against Florida. Does that mean if we lose Saturday and go to 2-3 , he is then doing a good job against Florida too ?

FL ain’t bama level. Beating bama means we beat a great team. Losing to fl means we choked. Only talking Napier years.

Considering he's lost 18 total games as UT's coach how is he 1-18 in road night kickoffs at UT? Have they all been on the road?
Right. He’s 5-7 in night road kickoffs at UT. I looked this up last week and posted it in another thread.

3-0 vs Kentucky
1-0 vs Vandy
1-0 vs Oklahoma
0-1 vs Arkansas
0-2 vs Alabama
0-1 vs Georgia
0-2 vs Florida
0-1 vs SCAR

He has as many SEC wins in Lexington since November 2021 as Kentucky does.

That is hilarious.

Looks like he is 2-5 in road games after 7 p.m. based on your chart, 6 of those games are clearly marked as being 7 or later. The 2024 Georgia game is listed as 3:30 but that game was definitely a 7 or later kick. The game is on YouTube and you can obviously see it's a prime time game. Also, wasn't Oklahoma last year in primetime? We won that one, so that would be 3-5.

I wonder how many for how many of those 18 losses Heupel didn’t shave. He needs to get a full b makeover to look like Mr Clean before entering the Swamp. Curse be gone.
