Sobering stat on JH in SEC night games

When are people going to realize that JH is not a good in-game manager/coach. Period. Good recruiter, nice guy.....but not good at the one thing he is paid to do: win on the road in the SEC. 1-18 in night games does not lie. And that's about what got James Franklin fired too.

Oh, but it does lie as that is not his record in night games. Also, I'm not sure I believe that the only thing he is paid to do is win road games.

From Basilio:

JOSH HEUPEL is overdue to win one of these games. He's too accomplished of a coach for the following to remain true ... Josh Heupel is 1-18 in road night kickoffs at UT against the rest of the SEC outside of Vandy, Kentucky and Oklahoma last season. Something has to give here. Florida stinks. Tennessee needs a clean first half and they should be on their way. If Tennessee goes down there and slops around with penalties and unforced errors it could be a long night. Florida wants to check out.
Quit bringing bull crap like this. I used to line Tony but he’s a useless idiot that hurts the program for his own gain.

The overwhelming majority of the "BIG ONEs", aka significant WINS, have eluded our coaching staffs for decades now.

If we don't win in a decisive manner or worse against Florida, who will be playing their version of the Super Bowl this weekend against us, than I say let's form the Grudes for HC@UT committee.

That’s my biggest complaint against Huepel. Which top tier teams have the Heupel led Vols beaten playing away games. His record against those teams is not very favorable. Make no mistake, the Gators are not at their best but I don’t know if Huepel and his staff have what it takes. We’ve been the better team too many times against the Gators and found a way to lose the game. We’ve already gifted Georgia and Oklahoma this year with wins.
Tho Florida on the road scares me it should be noted both of those teams are top 10 playoff teams. Doesnt make up for the loss but Florida is far and below their level.

On the road, at night...Heupel's kryptonite.

I've been saying that for a couple of years now.
Other than Vandy and UK, he has not done well in that situation.
And this year might just break the streak. I know BVS has caused nearly irreparable damage to the psyche of many UT fans. It is very disheartening when one reads post after post detailing just why we have absolutely no chance to win and exactly how we will lose.

Fact Check:

SEC Road Night Games Under Heupel (2021–2024)

Here are the road SEC games under Heupel, and which ones count (or arguably count) as “night / primetime” based on kickoff times or TV windows.

Estimation of His SEC Road Night Record (2021–2024)

  • Games that strongly qualify as “night” / primetime road SEC games (by my count):
    • 2021 @ Florida (7:30 PM) → Loss
    • 2023 @ Florida (7:00 PM) → Loss
    • 2023 @ Kentucky (7:00 PM) → Win
    • 2024 @ Arkansas (7:30 PM) → Loss
  • That gives a record of ~1 win and 3 losses in SEC road games that are clearly “evening/night.”
  • If you include more ambiguous “late afternoon / flex” games (e.g., 7:00 PM, or “flex window” games), the total number could shift slightly, but nowhere near 1–18.

Key Take-Aways

  1. Heupel does have some SEC road night losses, but only a small handful, not nearly 19.
  2. The “1–18” claim is not supported by publicly available schedules / box office data for 2021–2024.
  3. Based on this, it's much more accurate to say: Heupel’s road night SEC record is roughly 1–3 (or 1–4 at worst), depending on how “night” is defined.

So he's 1-18 in night games....as long as you take out the games that would help that stat?
