Miles won a National Championship and several conference titles. Yet, to my knowledge no one has reached out to hire him. Why?

Interestingly, there’s another coach we know who was fired who also had won a national championship, SEC titles and no one reached out to him either. Care to guess who?

I have known Phil a long time. I always thought highly of him. However, when he was named head coach of the Vols, I wasn’t so sure he was the right guy. What I failed to realize was that he was surrounded by great coaches. He had great coaches like Cutcliffe, Chavis, Kippy, Dan Brooks, etc.

Miles could also do well if he is surrounded with great coaches. Hopefully, we can recreate the magic of ‘98.

Miles is a super control freak...just as Butch was. It won't work...regardless of who assistants are.

Well...first, there's his age. Second, other schools aren't desperate due to a disastrous, failed coaching search that damaged the brand to the point they'd have no other option but to hire a coach that likely will step away from the game in 3-5 years leading to yet another search/change. Most schools want a longer term solution. UT isn't in the greatest position right now. Maybe Fulmer being the AD will change the dynamic. Remains to be seen what kind of candidate our damaged brand can attract.

I luv when people are beset to vocalize their own problems in life. You don’t know anything about Miles. You have 1 patented, push button response for all posts that clearly defines you’re intellect and pain. “He’s a control freak..”

Get help. Oh wait, I’m controlling you..my bad.

But, could Fulmer and Miles put together a staff that could get the train back on the tracks. The best cure for a damaged brand is winning.

Maybe Miles is waiting for the right job? Who knows? The 1998 team was just a perfect storm. It actually reminded me alot of Miles LSU teams. Great defense, great run game yet mediocre QB play. But its a winning strategy that worked then and is still working now.

Look at the best teams in the SEC. Alabama, Georgia and Auburn. All have great defense and running games. Only 1 has very good QB play. Then look at Missouri. They throw it all over the field yet win nothing. People can try and deny it all they want but facts are facts. The only way to win big in the SEC is play great defense and have a strong run game.

Probably because he ran an outdated offense that didn't work and was so stubborn, he let it cost him his job. He had talent, at least, equal to Alabama and was 3-7 against Saban. If he couldn't win a championship with that talent, how will he with a lesser roster?

In the last 3 years or so with Les Miles at LSU he was an offensive coordinator away from being really good IMO. He can recruit and he can develop IMO. Give him a good staff and he’ll be just fine here. If the rumors of Tee and Chavis/Steele are true I think that’ll be solid.

Good post. I agree with 98% of it. We sometimes take for granted the significance of a QB who does a great job executing the offense and making great plays when needed.

I think it's because he's so old and likely won't coach too much longer. Since we have a possible coach-in-waiting thing with Tee, it might be ideal for us.

I agree, I think we are past getting that "Home run hire". It might be a good idea to just get us back on solid ground, which Les could do. With Fulmer as AD, if we ended up with Les as HC, and Tee as OC/assistant HC. It would calm the waters and help save some recruiting. I know a lot might disagree with this. But at this point, we are a laughing stock and we really need to find some sanity. (I know, sanity and Les Miles in the same paragraph right?)

Please help me understand why people want Tee as AHC that title means nothing. Hoke had it this year. Also the coach in waiting thing. What if he comes in as OC and stinks it up and the HC gets fired are we stuck with him. Let him (tee or whomever) EARN their title.

If he hasn't stunk it up at USC, why would he all of a sudden stink it up here? If you don't want him here as OC just say it. Don't be lukewarm.

You give him that title to negate the negative recruiting that goes with hiring an older coach who might not be there for even 4 years. UT won't be stuck with anyone regardless of title. Might have to pay a buyout, but what else is new?

From SI

With another great recruiting class coming and Dave Aranda taking over the defense, this would be the season LSU got back to competing for championships.

Then Miles did nothing.

He didn't change offensive coordinators, even though Cam Cameron's contract expired after last season. (Instead, Cameron got another deal.) Miles didn't make any dramatic schematic changes to the offense, even though the Tigers have been predictable on that side of the ball for years. He and his offensive staff didn't develop the quarterbacks on the roster. They tried to land Oklahoma graduate transfer Trevor Knight, but Knight went to Texas A&M, where he has helped extinguish the seat beneath Kevin Sumlin. Instead, Miles dug in deeper—convinced that with Leonard Fournette toting the ball, the Tigers didn't need an offense from this century to overcome their competition in the SEC West.
