So, who quit?!

Or maybe it's hard for you to comprehend that Pruitt called out his players in order to get them to work harder to get better. I don't know how many sports you might have played, however, I do know that I played sports my whole life to include baseball and football in college and sometimes you have to call out your guys to get them to perform. Pruitt gave them an ultimatum start putting in the work and give 100% or else one of these new guys coming in will take your spot.

It is pretty much that simple. I appreciate your analysis on the way I think though. Good try.

Not much of an analysis, just found it silly you bringing up players who aren't on campus yet and automatically building in an excuse for the sorry defensive showing.

In your vast experience as a seasoned athlete, how many of your coaches had to get in front of a mic and the media to motivate their teams?

The really good ones can usually get that done on the practice field and scrimmages, not through the media after their team embarrasses themselves.

Pruitt was ticked off and had every right to be after that defensive showing. He didn't need to complain about the fans and call his guys quitters in front of everyone to motivate them though. If he does, then he may not be much of a coach.

You'd think with your vast experience as an athlete you'd pick up on a simple concept that I learned early on....keep that s**t in the locker room .

The program quit 10 years ago when it started caring more about going to class more than winning games.

You got the timing right, perhaps the reason wrong though. The program started going downhill IMO when the administration decided any old coach would do as a business decision. Let them run their course, can them if they don't work out, replace them with the same ilk, do it again after 4 or 5 years. Vol fans show up in numbers and buy gear no matter what was the thinking the $s flowed no matter whether we were winning or not, so why spend to win??? See some career .500 coach they tried to push off on us in Greg Schiano recently as another example. When that debacle was thwarted we at least now have people in administration who want the program to win as a priority. Now, they may not be able to pull it off, time will tell but it won't be due to ambivalence is my opinion.

Pruitt is looking for big fast tough guys who are intimidators...Jomes wanted nice guys.. Big difference

Players keep the stuff in the Locker Rooms coaches on National Stages tell the truth. Sorry your feelings were hurt as a fan. He called it like it was like everyone including you saw. It was a big dump pile on defense. Does that mean they won't get better? Nope. You show me a coach on a national stage that hasn't called out his players efforts (if they were bad) because even the Great Nick Saban has done that.... I guess you are used to hearing sweet nothings whispered into your ears....

That is absolutely true. Very common. Bobby Bowden did it. Steve Spurrier did it. Urban Meyer does it. Nick Saban, too. Lou Holtz made an art form of it.

It's almost harder to come up with a list of championship coaches who DON'T give frank and honest (and sometimes even disparaging) public assessments of their teams.

The line you see very few of them cross is calling out individual players. It happens occasionally, but not very often. And rightfully so. Direct, personal, individual criticism should be given in private.

Funny how it's always players' fault when the next great hope rolls in here and the team ends up flopping on the field like that 1st team defense did Saturday.

Getting a little weird around here with everyone worrying about everyone else's feelings. Thought this was a football forum. Or is it you just don't have anything to actually offer to the discussion?

I would hope that the team gets better this Fall considering the defense got schooled by a guy many on here says doesn't belong in the SEC in Guarantano. There's a dose of truth for you.

So you are telling me that Kongbo not being able to get past a piece meal O-Line isn't his fault? Did you even watch his effort? He was pretty much stood up at first contact everytime. That players effort must have been the coaches fault.... What about Palmer shying away from contact and dropping passes I suppose that was the coaches fault as well. Guarantano has improved due to his effort and I am just going to throw it out there, probably due to a certain offensive coordinators help (coaching). Those are facts.

I mean come on man get real.

So they are 15 practices in and can't get effort out of one of their most important D line players according to you?

You're not exactly making a great sales pitch for the coaches here buddy.

They are giving him a chance because he is gifted but if he continues not giving effort and being beat on the line he won't start.

As for me not making a great sales pitch for the coaches, they are giving him all the tools look at Kyle Phillips he did extremely well. So this will by my last comment to you since you seem to not grasp that sometimes a player just doesn't have the will or the want to, to become a better player. In Kongbos place it's showing that he just doesn't have the drive at this moment to compete (something a coach can't necessarily fix - you can't make a kid want to but you can give him the tools to be able to).

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. Guess JGA expects the coaches to force Kongbo to open his mouth and swallow water. They can't play for him, can only give him all the tools to be successful and put him in the right position to succeed. The rest is on himself

Kongo still standing around a bunch.

:good!: I got torched for calling him out in the Bama game last year, even though he should have been suited up for them. He seems out of shape still...takes bad angles and gets there slow. I hope Pruitt can dig the diamond out of him this year how ever you spell it.

Nah. I just expect a coach to sit a guy when its determined they aren't playing to their ability instead of complaining about it to the press after the fact. I would like to think Pruitt can make a determination as to effort from a player after 15 practices. Maybe not though.

I'm not a Kongbo fan either but there are better ways to get his or anyone else's attention than calling out players in the press.

Some of the seasoned athletes around here are quick to get defensive any time any coach gets questioned though. Getting pretty silly at this point.

Oh, you can indeed make him drink - and that is what they are trying to do - they are poring the knowledge down his throat and giving him the opportunity. The one thing you cant do, however, is make him THIRSTY. That has to come from within.

Nah, just observing how pissy and whiney he was after the number 1 defense embarrassed themselves by giving up 34.

He must have gotten sick of watching the game and started counting fans in the stands to have made the idiotic comment about the attendance.

I'm sure the irony of making excuses for him not having his players in place while espousing how tough and no nonsense a coach Pruitt is is completely lost on you when you typed your response.

It's a spring game. Calm down.

Funny ...could it be that the defense was not schemed and played mostly vanilla base , unpackaged . Maybe coaches do this for evaluation ? You know , start with the base and build as needed from there . I have never seen this happen in an NFL preseason game ...ever

No offence but your posts have been very cringe worthy, and embarrassing.

If possible I would like to address a point I made earlier in this thread about the O&W game and players quitting. Did anyone else feel the WR's kind of gave up on their routes? Maybe it was just a timing thing but it seemed to me a lot of the overthrown passes were due to the WR slowing down or giving up on the route. Am I wrong?

Jones was given instructions to raise the academic performance and clean up the off field reputation of the program. He did that. Pruitt comes from a school who can hide and cover up drug arrests, gun arrests, beatings of girlfriends. He'll find out that won't work in Knoxville.

Perfectly valid excuse except the coach decided to call out the players for lack effort.

If any post on here is having enough of an effect on you that you cringe, I'd suggest taking some pharmaceuticals to help yourself out. Maybe stepping away from the keyboard for awhile.

It's a football board, not turning keys on a nuclear launch.

You don't like my opinions, hit the ignore button.

Haha, Jon, this is pretty hypocritical, coming from a guy who just this morning moaned in another thread about being embarrassed by the tweets of bama and dawg fans.

Here's that quote:

Never said it would affect recruiting much. End of the day, it's the one on one relationships these position coaches develop with players that matters most I believe.

Sitting down one on one with recruits or even with the on campus visits and coaches bringing up players they coached is a given and should be highlighted.

Opening themselves up to get roasted on Twitter and highlighting a group of players that starred for other programs while UT has routinely been lousy while those guys were in school is a bit..ahem...short sighted.

This school has been embarrassed plenty on and off the field the last decade. Yet they keep opening themselves and us fans up as targets.

This is about as goofy as "opportunity is nowhere" IMO.

Here's that quote:

Speaking of moaning, why are you invested enough in my posts to follow me around and interject yourself into my comments toward another poster?

You don't like my opinions on how Pruitt handled the PC and how silly that Twitter post was, so be it. No need to start stalking me around the board.

That itself might actually be a bit cringeworthy.
