So, who quit?!

Pruitt was obviously displeased with some of the players effort(lack thereof) during the O&W game. I'm sure the buy-in after a total staff transformation isn't even close to 100%...this is a given...

Football is a fast game and it's impossible to watch all 11 guys(or 22) at once...

I, for one, welcome this mentality...

Just curious if anyone noticed blatant lack of effort...going through the motions(besides the crowd :)) ....and who CJP might be referencing?!

How can you be accused of quitting on a play when you are not allowed to finish it? Two hand touch the QB? Let them go full speed and put him on his butt and you will see more effort.

I’m not sure if he quit or is just really bad but I’m rewatching the game and #22 Abernathy can’t play. He’s slow, takes bad angles, and looks scared of contact. The drive where Tim Jordan scores to make it 17-0 he gets exposed. I’m not sure how he’s gotten so much PT for us these last few years...

I thought this was the Jalen Hurd thread?

I thought this a QD thread...since Butch had to talk him out of quitting a few times

Honestly, I think what he saw was players giving 3 great efforts every 6 seconds and trying to get 1% better every day at practice. I think he wanted more than that.

Abernathy is not a good SEC football player. No other way to say it. I would be very surprised if Theo Jackson doesn't get the starting nod over Abernathy in the opener.

Interesting. Pruitt questioning fans equals okay. Fans questioning Pruitt equals not okay? I'm all for having patience and giving Pruitt his chance, but I worry some are so enamored that we're entering that point again where the head coach can do no wrong. Every coach has their defenders. I get that. But we(TN fans) tend to give devotion to a coach well before he earns it. Happened with Kiffin, happened with Dooley, happened with Butch.

We "didn't draft" Pruitt. He "chose" us. So I guess he did us a favor by taking lots of money to coach our players. Said players look less than impressive at the spring game and suddenly that's all on them, and somehow, the fans. I personally don't remember conducting any spring practices, yet somehow, as a fan, it's my fault? My point is, it's just not a good look. It's gonna rub some people the wrong way and it's easy to understand why.

All of that aside, we still have a long way to go. And like I said, fans should be patient with Pruitt and give him a chance. He's a first time head coach and there will be missteps. I think the criticism of fans was such a misstep. You take away the meet and greet with the players and expect 100,000 fans to show up after a 4-8 season? Not realistic. One of the biggest draws of the OW game was getting to meet the players. Take that away and you're just watching a glorified practice.

I used to say the same thing about Justin Martin. He had a couple of good plays, but he got beat a LOT.

For what it's worth, I will ALWAYS do this. Why? Because my VFL fan roots. The short answer is: "I will have total buy in with the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers until they give me a reason not to". Period. Eventually, Kiffin, Dooley and Butch gave me that reason. Pruitt is still a work in progress. Stupid to trash him before he screws up (if he screws up).

I live in Alabama. I remember the Saban hate after Louisiana Monroe beat them in his first year. Pruitt has a lot of softies on this team. Same thing could very well happen to him. If people are "dissing" him before he's even had a first snap, they will come out of the woodwork on the first loss. Happened to Saban, and will happen here.

Talk about Battered VOL syndrome - Bama had it after the 3 Mike's. (Price, Shula, Dubose). Happens. Give the man a chance.

Not exactly.

Pruitt questioning YOU equals okay. He didn't question me, because (1) I'm not local to the stadium, and (2) I showed up anyway.

So Pruitt questioning fans wouldn't be okay, but he didn't question all fans, just the lazy-ass fans who didn't come to the O&W game.

See? It's all okay. :)

[it's the internet, so I need to point out: I'm just kidding around with you, this was all in fun, don't take it too serious :good!: ]

I'm ok with easing up on a hit... why take a guy out with an injury?

But if they just quit, no effort to close on a play, then yeah those guys need to rethink why they are even out there. JP might be over reacting a bit.

Now... I did see some video tape of the fans... way too many were talking on cell phones, taking selfies, and eating hot dogs. No fights observed, a lot of folks just sitting.

This is sort of hitting at my confusion. What is the standard for "quitting" at what amounts to a dress rehearsal of a scrimmage?

Ah, I see. The fact I did not attend makes me a lazy ass fan. Has zero to do with the fact my health is ****. And I'm sure others had legit reasons as well, but then, they're just lazy ass fans as well. There's this thing called life and it tends to get in the way sometime but that never seems to stop judgmental pricks.

Did you read all of my post, or just what you wanted to see? I advocated giving Pruitt a chance. I still think criticizing the fans is a mistake though.

These are the guys that turned in the worst season in the programs history. I understand that the leader ship was a huge problem , but these were the guys that were on the field. Poor moral , bad habits , lack of conditioning , lack of football coaching ...whatever . With these guys it is going to take time to undo .

Certainly no one thought that it was going to be undone in 14 practices

I took it as a call out to the players , and CJP seeing on the field what we all saw on the scoreboard last season

There's irony in you complaining in post #48 that a guy didn't read your entire note before responding, right after you clearly missed the last line of the note you replied to in post #47. :)
