So who exactly is our Tight End in 2020?

The TEs on the roster are not SEC players. It is the position group most devoid of talent. Odds are greater that the starter is a freshman than one already on the roster.

I believe Coach Pruitt said something like this about the tight end position his first year here when he said” if all they ( tight ends) can do is catch the ball, I’d rather just put another WR out there” in other words TEs need to block first.

If push comes to shove (literally) just put a small number on a guard or tackle and stick him out there.

Ive heard that Jackson Lowe fell short in blocking. If that’s the case it isn’t like he’s not capable of learning the schemes in a year. He’s got the size and he seems to have soft hands. My vote goes to him.

Pope will continue to play the H back in the backfield on two back sets.....The TE position is totally up for grabs. This spring was gonna be a big one for the others. Warren, in particular, fits the mold as a pass catcher with the size you want and looks to have gotten himself the weight he'll need to succeed. My $ would be on him being in DWA's spot.

Dee Beckwith after he gets in S&C and gains a little weight .
He's not built to be a tight end, never going to be wide enough even though he is 6'5 235 now, He'll replace JJs role in the offense I feel. Think bigger, stronger and a lot faster than JJ.

I think you’ll see us a lot more spread out, 4 wide. Bunch of added speed in the slot with guys like Jones Jr, Calloway, Hyatt. Less 11 personnel, definitely fewer 2TE sets.
Beckwith in the slot when we go 4 WR will likely replace the TE formations a bunch of the time.

Pope has had some moments, a lot of them were bad, but also some good. Maybe he can put it together this season. TEs tend to take more time to develop so I wouldn't hold your breath for a Freshman to come in and light it up.

I thought we were thin at TE but it seems to me that Pruitt must feel relatively good about the position. It seemed like he was only looking to sign high level talent in the 2020 class. He didn't feel the need to take an average but solid player. He must be thinking he's got the position adequately covered with Pope, Warren, Fant, Brown and Lowe. And as someone pointed out, you can always put in an extra OT for blocking.

Here's the way I see it. (however I do wear tri-focal glasses)
Until we improve the QB position, our TE must be a blocker first. Only a couple of times a game when he is the only option given to the QB should he be the target.
So for me, I expect to see the best blocker be the starter.

Pope? Fant? Jacob Warren?

Is it just me or do we seem ill prepared for this role in 2020?

Pope started last year and he'll start this year. He's a vital part of the running game. The question is, who replaces DWA as the pass-catching TE. My money is on Dee Beckwith to fill that role, if he can put on the weight needed.

Fant has seemed out of position the whole time he's been here. Warren, is he the one with the string of injuries in HS? Pope is serviceable as a blocker. Lots of mysteries at TE, even the two RS FR. Coaches are gonna have to roll the dice and see if someone takes the lead. I expect a heavy rotation at TE with Pope getting a majority of the reps where a blocker is needed. Not sure who steps up in that current group.

Pope is more than "serviceable" as a blocker. He's one of the best, if not the best blocking TE in the SEC.

Does it matter? We haven't thrown to him since Mychal Rivera was on campus.

Gotta have a QB that can get them the ball. I'm reminded of JG overthrowing DWA by 10 yards in the middle of the field with no defenders within 20 yards of him.

I see Pope in more of a FB/H-back role. Either way, he's going to see the field often.

It'll be interesting to see how our other upper classmen, Jordan Allen (is he still at TE?) and P. Fant, develop and fit in this year. I would think that Fant, Warren and maybe Beckwith would be more receiving options and Allen, Brown, and Lowe are going to be primarily blockers due to their size. I'm sure they'd probably like to redshirt Beckwith.

What I do know is that playing time is available and these guys all better show up ready to compete.

agree w/everyone talking about Pope...he's gonna play a lot. he's valuable in the blocking schemes and he'll get more opportunities to make receptions this fall i would imagine. the other TE spot, that's a debate. you got Fant, Warren, Brown and Lowe. my gut says Fant, simply because he's got the experience edge. but i think they really want to see one of those other 3 take a big step forward and seperate themselves. all three came in with some pretty good potential and they've now been here long enough that it should start to click. for now, i'll say Fant and Pope. but one, probably 2 of the other three are gonna have to step up....

We also have Jackson Lowe 4 star he’s a redshirt freshman. And Sean Brown 3 star redshirt freshman.
Dang! Thanks for the memory jog of Sean Brown. I have been trying to remember him after reading about him months ago. He's going to be a bruiser!
