So what? What's America?

How does allowing gay marriage or legalizing drugs limit anyone's freedom?

It limits the closed minded wankers from seeing the uptight white dream they have always tried so hard to push on every human being they come in contact with. Too much? Probably not

What freedom have you lost in the past thirty years at the hands of the big bad libs?

their fingers are all over the Patriot Act, NDAA and NSA surveillance. Freedoms are being lost with Obamacare and the IRS targets groups based on their political leanings (but only one way).

to claim libs haven't had a hand in this is asinine

Where did I say that? I can tell you how welfare & reverse discrimination does. Of course we can always go on a liberal rant about a lot of stupid s*** that "should" be allowed that's in line with drugs & gay marriage. Of course they would be far fetched since libs want what's convenient & fits their agenda.

What is America?

America is many things in my mind. It is my birth country and being an American is something that I would never give up. America is the idea that things will only get better for those who seek out to better their lives. America can achieve the impossible when the many believe in her, but also when many doubt her.

When I first had moved back to the States, I hadn't changed my location on Facebook and a Polish friend had asked me if I were still in Paris. I told her that I had returned to Tennessee and that I was already missing my Parisian life a bit, and then she quipped while I may be missing my Parisian life, many of her fellow country men would love to be in my place in search of an American Dream. I've met other eastern Europeans who told me that while they didn't agree with America (the government), it was always with the best intentions at heart and all they dreamed about was the American Dream when under Russian control.

I met an Iraqi a few years ago in Italy, and all he could do was talking about glowingly about America. He did admit that there was no love lost with the US government; although, he was excited about Obama being president (this was right after he was elected).

According to the French, America is cowboys and Indians. And according to the Italians, America is whiskey, soda, and rock 'n' roll (I realize many of you will probably not get this joke). And according to the Latin Americans, America is every country from Canada down to Argentina and that we need to get a name for our country despite the fact there is a difference between the Americas and America in English.

I've always been a fan of this. It was written by former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

The next years will test the American character. America won't be loved in this presidency any more than in previous ones. But America should have confidence. That ideal, which produces the optimism that generates the achievement, is worth all the striving. It is the most precious gift a nation can have. The world is changing. New powers are emerging. But this does not diminish the need for that American ideal. It reaffirms it, renews it, gives it added relevance. There is always one, more prosaic, test of a nation's position: Are people trying to get into it, or to get out of it? I think we know the answer to that in America's case, and that ideal is the reason.

A friend of mine whose parents were immigrants, Jews from Europe who came to America in search of safety, told me this story. His parents lived and worked in New York. They were not well off. His father died when he was young. His mother lived on, and in time my friend succeeded and became wealthy. He often used to offer his mother the chance to travel outside America. She never did. When eventually she died, they went back to recover the safety box where she kept her jewelry. They found there was another box. There was no key. So they had to drill it open. They wondered what precious jewel must be in it. They lifted the lid. There was wrapping and more wrapping and finally an envelope. Intrigued, they opened it. In the envelope were her U.S. citizenship papers. Nothing more. That was the jewel, more precious to her than any other possession. That was what she treasured most. So should America today.

Welfare limits your freedoms? What percentage of your taxes go to welfare? REVERSE discrimination? You can't be serious. As a white person I can't fathom claiming racism has had any bearing on my life.

We can spend over a trillion dollars at war every year but the same people complain that welfare is ruining our country every single moment they can. We could completely wipe out poverty with the money we spend on war. War=good Food for poor=bad

While I myself get tired of seeing the government take money from my pocket every month I for sure would never complain that some of it might be going to welfare. You know that whole thing that the bible preaches. I'd start with the haircuts and gym memberships and everything else we provide to already wealthy aristocrats that run our country. Keep on fighting the good fight though, keep that food out of people's mouths.

Yeah I agree with you pj. That's why I say fire them all and let's start over by electing individuals who actually have a track record of common decency.

It isn't that welfare is bad. It's using welfare as a permanent form of sustainence while not wanting to improve your station in life. It's not wanting to be a productive member of society and not wanting better for your family. It's a lack of ambition. If a single mother if several kids can go back to school to get a better job, why can't everyone else?

We could debate all day about the "American Dream," but at the end of the day, yes, this is a damn good country to live in.

Good post.

1. It's adorable how you always turn everything into a liberal vs conservative thing.

2. When have I ever supported welfare or even used the word "reverse discrimination"? And how are those in anyway related to freedom?

Bull****. The IRS targeted both left and right leaning groups.
