My comment was tongue-in-cheek. Player development is a huge deal and something UT never seems to excel doing.

I just think it would be funny if the recruiting services expanded how many 4 & 5 star recruits there were in high school so that more NCAA teams *think* they've landed an amazing class, only to watch as they go 5-7 the next year.

Good recruiters know how to sell a program to high school players. They build relationships with high school coaches over time, and know which high schools tend to develop D1-level talent. They spot talented players early in their high school careers (and sometimes earlier), track their progress, and start building relationships with these players and their parents.

Some coaches are way, way better at this sort of thing than others. There is an art to it, much like salesmanship.

For our recruiting class for 2017 we were 17th by 247 Sports with only one 5* recruit. We were ranked 15th by ESPN. What it comes down to is can coaches take those 3* & 4* players & coach them up.

If they can then a school can become a successful program like the Bama's & Clemson's & Michigan's & Ohio State's. There are other schools that could be named here too.

It comes down to having a coaching staff to coach up these players & putting them in the right positions/places to succeed. Cam Sutton was a 3* coming out of high school & his senior year I'd say it would be fair to say he was close to a 5* player with all the things he done & did them very well.

It's hard for us to compete with the likes of Bama, Florida, LSU, Auburn, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, & the other teams in the SEC alone. Then you factor in the P5 conferences in all & it's just a gigantic task for a coaching staff to pull in higher level recruits. One thing we're going to have to start doing is not allowing the 4* & 5* recruits in-state get away from us. It just can't continue to happen.

CBJ has to put a total stop to this somehow. There's not much he can do if a player doesn't want to come play for us though. We start winning 10+ games a season & be a factor in the SEC East & National Championship each year then we will start consistently getting more of the higher level recruits. It's really as simple as that.

Can CBJ be the coach to do it though? I really don't think any of us really know that yet. We were supposed to turn the corner this past season but we didn't. It can't be season after season of 8-4 & 7-5 to get back up there with the big dogs. It's going to take some 10+ win season(s) to get it going again for UT as a traditional powerhouse again. Thanks!

Perfect reason why this is a crucial time for Butch. He's an excellent salesman and got kids to buy in early. Now, it's either win with elite talent or its impossible to keep up the same or similar results. Very much in believe he's going to do well.

You lost me at the "It's hard for us to compete with.......". We are one of the most tradition-rich colleges in the nation along with our state-of-the-art facilities, not to mention the beautiful scenery of East Tennessee! Also, Tennessee's D1 output is increasing on a yearly basis and that can do nothing but help our cause.

The days of a 5 star kid with great talent, good grades and a good character going to a school to be that missing piece as a leader by example, leading that team to success is a dying breed if not dead. Most of these 5 stars want to go to an already top 5 team be on the roster and really don't care if they play or contribute. They just want to be on that roster, and collect accolades including that NFL thing.

Some coaches are really good coaches that can coach up a 3* kid during his college years into a solid NFL prospect but they're not really good at recruiting top players to come play for them so their recruiting is a disadvantage to the college.

Some coaches are really good recruiters/salesmen but they're just not really good coaches and can't coach up a 3* kid into a solid NFL prospect so kids learn that they won't learn as much from a certain college to advance their NFL hopes.

The ideal situation is to have coaches that are both great recruiters that can bring in top HS prospects and can really coach them up and keep the kids motivated and working hard so their NFL hopes come true.

Sadly there's not a lot of the 3rd type of coaches that can recruit great and can really coach up the kids.

Some schools settle for a better recruiter to try to keep some top recruits coming in and hope the HC can help make that coach better at teaching kids how to become a better player.

It's a VERY tough and difficult situation for a HC to try to balance out and make work so the WINS keep adding up.

I'd much rather be a NFL coach because you don't have to work your butt off recruiting and trying to get the kids and their parents to come to your college and that's a year around task of unreal hours.

We were running on tradition & still have it but it's not what it used to be & that's why higher level recruits shy away from UT now. I agree with you on the facilities.
