So What are we going to do about these kids?

Exactly. My parents would tell the school to whip me if I needed it and then let them know and they would take care of it at home. Guess what? I learned not to act a fool and do as I was told. My two sons have learned the same thing. My gut feeling wants to say kick off any player that screws up and is truly involved, regardless of the offense. But then the UT fan in me doesn't want to lose top players. It would drive the message home if you went with 0 tolerance. I guarntee.

Does your opinion apply to all college students or just football players?

What a stupid question. Wouldn't anyone, student or athlete, benefit from being raised better?

Sure they would, even with a so-called "proper raising" there's no guarantee a college aged kid will make the right choices, especially when you're in a setting where there's lots of alcohol and testosterone.

I'd wager if you took a zero tolerance approach with every college kid like you're suggesting for student-athletes, you'd see a lot more kids getting kicked out of school.

I'm sure you know parents who've raised their kid the right way, yet still for whatever reason that kid can't stay out of trouble.

Upbringing is definitely a contributor, but it's not the only factor by any stretch.

I agree totally. I think a 0 approach would be next to impossible for students. But you could for athletes. If a football player knows he will be kicked off the team if he's caught after midnight drinking, I would imagine most would be in their rooms at 11:30.

Like Dooley said, "It's a privilege to be on the team.... not a right." Sometimes you have to make sacrifices for those privileges.

To your point I wouldn't mind having a set of standards for students or student-athletes on scholarship.

Money is too tight for universities right now to waste it on kids acting a fool on their dime.

As long as you can hold their feet to the fire, the possibility is there. I'd love it

I disagree. Just because your heart has been beating for 18 years doesn't mean you're necessarily mature enough to be considered an adult

So then when is one mature enough? 25?, 40?
Or do we just let some people get away with whatever they want?
If these guys have any brains at all they know how fortunate they are to have the opportunities they have. Frankly a 12 year old should have the sense to know how good they have it.

.......If you think any measure of prevention is going to keep people ( young and old, alike) from thier own moments of stupidity, then you are underestimating the power of an individual's desire to get what they want.

Not in America, just ask military officials when they start recruiting their "kids". If an 18 year old is mature enough to go to war for our country and put his/her life on the line, i will sure as hell call him an adult!:salute:

Trust me, those 18 year old soldiers are old enough to fire a weapon and go to war, but a lot of them are far from mature adults. From the first time they step off that cattle car at basic to the day they get to their first unit, discipline and doing the right thing is beat into their heads.

Once they get to their first unit, it's a whole different world from what they got in basic and AIT. They don't have that 24/7 supervision that they had before and a lot of them now have more money than they've probably ever had before and once they are away from work and the squad leader or platoon sgt is telling them what to do all the time, it's now time to see what he can get into. Now it's time to get his new buddy that's 21 to run down to the Class VI (liquor store) and see if he can buy out the store. Or better yet head to one of the local bars and see if they can drink it dry (most of us do love to drink).

I'm not knocking the Army or the military (well unless you were a part of the United States Social club, i.e. USAF) since I spent almost half my life in it, but we were far from angels either. An 18 year old soldier may be more disciplined when it counts and he may have to lay his life on the line, but they do love a good party and if their first duty station is Korea, they will learn more about partying in that year than any college student will learn in four years in school. Oh and I was only kidding boys in blue, we only kid because your idea of roughing it is having to stay in a 4* hotel instead of a 5* hotel when deployed....:)

Ya i got a bud up in Alaska right now, he says they sit around play games and get drunk:p

But only adults make it through camp, there's no other way around that pal. Everybody's had a party or 2 in them.

I don't advocate that anyone get a pass, first of all. That isn't my point. I'm saying that it's something to expect. People act shocked that 18 year old kids are getting into trouble, and they're blaming their anger on them as if they're adults who are making decisions of sound mind.

And as for your final point, see:
JaMarcus Russell
Quinton Ganther
Chris Simms
Cedric Benson
Corey Dillon
Michael Vick
Derrick Morgan
Ray McDonald
Vince Young
Quinn Ojinnaka
Phillip Merling
Harry Coleman
Kevin Ellison
Mario Urrutia
Maurice Purify
Vincent Jackson

^ Just a short list of NFL players within the last few months who have messed up with the law. Are you going to tell me they don't know how good they've got it?

I must have missed that within the last two months. Link?

That information doesn't relate to my point.

OK.. ur point was that kids feel entitled... right?

i dont disagree with that... they need a real good dose of reality.. but examples of NFL players who have done wrong does not = the college players and their expierences..... they will live... they will learn.. they will learn their way or the hard way (CDD way).... either way if CDD sticks to the plan.... we will weed out the weak and field the strong!

Not the point I was making at all. The post to which I was responding talked about kids knowing what they've got, and how they wouldn't do something to ruin it. I listed NFL players within the last 2 months who have messed up with lots more at stake.
