So we've heard 3rd Down For What for the last time this year, do we keep it next year

no! The fans should get up and raise heck because they love the team not because of some stupid rap song. /endrant

Honestly, I think we should keep it one more year. It gets the fan base fired up, the team loves it, and it's gotten some media attention. The subtle things like that definitely play a hand in recruiting, especially when players are on campus to watch the game.

However......

I will play my own devil's advocate here. Does anyone think it's counter-productive on 3rd downs? What I mean is, right when it's 3rd down, the music cues up. The crowd isn't loud until the music stops playing, they are too busy dancing. This gives the other team time to discuss the play. An effective crowd gets loud while the other team is trying to discuss the next play. You don't want the offense to be able to hear what the QB is saying. The crowd isn't loud until they line up to snap the ball.

But I'm digressing. Keep it? Or leave it? And is it counter-productive?

I think they should play the line from dumb and dumber "wanna hear the most annoying sound ever" and blast the screech until the balls snapped. That or babies crying. That one always makes me nervous.

Hope it's run its course- seems it encourages the other team more when it's played .. although everyone joins in, I don't think it does any good but sound good.. :whistling:

Did it get old by the end of the season? Maybe, but the college kids loved it—I've never seen so many arms waving around in the air. Also, it sure did create a lot of positive buzz around the program.

Although it's not my type of music, I hope they continue the trend with something new next year.

I think this is the only season we'll have it. The song is old. But, it wouldn't surprise me if we have a new 3rd down song next year, or if Lil Jon makes something for us to use next year.

This was my exact thought. The song was getting old even as the season started, by next season it will be ancient.

The connection with Lil John is a good one to keep though, so maybe get him to make something specifically for UT.

Get Swiperboy to make up a new one that's a Tennessee original with reference to Rocky or Orange.

I like it. It gets fans up. It pumps up players. It is getting a bit overplayed though. I heard it played at the San Diego Chargers game yesterday. I say keep it, but mix in some other songs in that situation. I think John Adams column is over the top and out of touch with college kids and contemporary music. The proverbial tent is big enough to include new and old traditions. I have learned to like Rocky Top. It was not so cool in 1979 when I was a student. I am sure Led Zeppellin's Immigrant Song played for the defense was not so popular with my parent's generation when the band unveiled it. You hear Crazy Train, TNT and Enter Sandman. Why not hip hop?
