So, in review......

a) We've beaten UGA and nearly no one saw that coming....

b) We're currently 6-4 and practically no one thought we'd be here at this point in the season....

c) We lost in OT to Oklahoma which is currently 9-1 and just beat #6 Baylor and now ranked #7 in the nation

d) We lost to UF in the last minute of the game and UF is now #1 in the SEC East and sitting at 9-1 and ranked #8 in the nation

e) We lost to Bama (late in the game) which is also 9-1, ranked #1 in the SEC West and ranked #3 in the nation

f) We got spanked against Ark - but that team is re-surging big-time and just beat a top-10 LSU team and previously beat a ranked Ole Miss team

Now I'm not promoting "moral victory U" but we're closer than we think (or at least some think). We may have stunk up the locker room with N Texas, but considering the competition thus far and the 2 SEC games to play.....it should have been somewhat expected.

If we win out with broken streaks over UGA and MZ and end at 8-4 with a nice bowl game, I think had this scenario above been placed in everyone's crystal ball on August 1st, there would have been more smiles than frowns in VN.

Blast away if you will...

Either we are closer than some people think

OR

We are a decent head coach away from being truly special

My belief is the second one

To point B, nearly everyone thought we'd be 6-4 or better at this point. This is exactly where I had us, although I had a win against Arkansas and a loss against UGA.

But, we're not undefeated and the UGA game doesn't count this year. Debord is old. Dobbs can't throw. We're playing xxxx on the O-line instead of xxxx. Butch is too conservative. Our team plays down to opponents. Ugly wins.

/end thread

Got in before the negavols...

Practically no one saw us at 6-4? Honestly I thought we'd be 7-3. Plenty predicted 9-3.

Butch has definitely upped our talent level...but he'll have to deliver more than close losses...I know we gave Fulmer a 5 season pass to get us into the SECCG but I doubt people will wait that long for Butch to get us to Atlanta...and I know they won't wait 9 years for an SEC Championship like we did with Johnny...

So if we're not in serious contention for the East Division next season, Butch will be on the hot seat...

I had predicted 8-2 at this point preseason. I thought Ark and Bama would beat us, but I truly did not see OU or UF beating us. I think a lot of people were in that boat and that's why all the raging about those two losses, both of which were still inexcusable. By the time of the Ark game I assumed we would beat them, but we came out totally flat. Had Berry not run back the opening kick they would have completely embarrassed us.

I'm not sure how we weren't in contention this year. One stop on 4th and 14 against Florida, and we are buying tickets for Atlanta right now and praying they don't blow the game this Saturday. I also think if we beat UF we don't go out and lay an egg the next week against Arkansas. That's as close as you can be without winning it.

One more point I feel needs to be said again... DeBord gets lots of hate, but his unit didn't blow any of those leads...it is the unit that gave us those leads. Our offense has gaps, but is good enough to play against any team in college football and score enough to win. They admittedly are weak on finishing that final drive, but the defense is who let those games go.

Ha yeah 8-2 is not a prediction. It's a dream...

You're exactly right but you've come to the wrong place to share it. Too many depressing idiots on here that think they know more than the whole coaching staff and never make a mistake on their jobs. We should be very pleased based on the competition we have faced. Thanks for a realist upbeat thought.

You can look at this glass half full or half empty and both make a whole lot of sense.

Hall full

Tennessee has only lost games to good teams and could have won each of them. With a little bit of luck or the right bounce of the ball, Tennessee could be 9-1 or 10-0 all with a pretty young football team. Tennessee was able to run the ball well for the first time in years.

Half empty

Tennessee found ways to lose. Again. You can put lipstick on the pig all you want, but they pulled defeat out of the jaws of victory. Sometimes in mind numbing fashion because of highly questionable coaching decisions. Worse still, a team that Tennessee hates that most thought would be lucky to be bowl eligible is sitting where Tennessee could be. In addition, the QB still can't throw the football and WR talent has been completely wasted

I understand what ppl had preseason but if someone told u we would be up by 2 tds against OK and FL in 4th qt u would have picked those as wins.

Expectations changed once we saw how we dominated those 2 teams. What happened was they went from attack mode to conservative and no adjustments

This is a sign of a young football; team with a good football coach that is growing with the team, time will tell like the 16 season if we are are at 6 and 4 this time next year then we might have a problem the 16 season is the no excuse team or season, time to put up or shut up.

In all seriousness, there isn't a program in our conference I'm more wary of in the near future, outside of Tuscaloosa, then yours.

Your trajectory is only going up, WAY up...We're gonna run the East, just like old times...We're gonna be thorns in each other's sides, and pain in each other's asses for years to come.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but this year was never a year to expect a playoff run. It was always 2016. We are right where we should have expected to been in the W-L column.

....could be to 3 top 10 teams with 2 of those teams (Alabama/Florida and Oklahoma) potentially making the playoffs and arguably the 2nd place team in the SEC West (Arkansas) by a combined 17 points.

North Texas was an outlier. This team has played the best teams in the country and a few plays from being the #1 team in the country. And this with all our injuries and reliance on youth.

We're close. This team has the potential to be a playoff contender in 2016.
