Middleton's was probably targeting. The hit on JG was definitely targeting. He attacked with the crown of his helmet

Recall a couple of years ago when a veteran NFL defensive back said the "new rules" gave him no recourse than to go for the knees...runner's nightmare. Seems that the rules have become so clouded (changed every year) that players, coaches & officials are confused. Wanted to slap Matt Austin with his "analysis" on the game last night. He's just a tool defending his pals.

I just watched the replay of the TD where JG and JJ got hammered. Both were clearly clean hits.

It's hard to have an honest opinion when I have my orange glasses on, which is all the time. Sorry to the QB, but that's the nature of the beast. Don't play QB then. I thought it was a mostly clean, yet devastating hit, and I would have held the flag. But, I can't complain too much. I had my share of headaches from playing and I don't want anyone to go away from football with PTBI. So I am ok with them trying to clean the game up. I just hope that over time the refs figure out how to distinguish what is malicious and what is just plain old fashioned football.

I don't like the end of the stick we keep getting with targeting calls.

Thank you to all the fans at Neyland last night. "REFS YOU SUCK!!!", was clearly audible on TV. The announcers were doing all they could to 'ignore the elephant in the room'(pun intended), while the chant was going.

The ejection consequences behind targeting are too severe to let officiating crews keep flagging it arbitrarily with no public accountability.

How could the refs be forced to call targeting better?
1. Refs suspended same as players, after post game film reviews, for missed targeting calls? If safety were truly the concern that would already be so........
No, not plausible as the game would become unplayable with all the flags thrown.
2. Refs suspended same as players for overturned targeting calls?
No, that would never work. The refs would never call targeting.
3. Change the defininition of targeting & roughing. I think this could actually work.

Change the writing of the rules so helmet to helmet contact can be called as roughing and flagged 15yrds without ejection.
Middleton & Bituili wouldn't have been ejected in that scenario.

Targeting has to show clear, not incidental contact, with intent to injure. Basically the old definition of spearing. Targeting can then be overturned if there's no helmet to helmet contact or downgraded to roughing if its deemed incidental.

If a player can be ejected I think a ref should face suspension for overturned targeting calls but I know that will never happen.

Exactly, that is my take on Middleton getting called there. The dude is 6'8, if he literally looks at the ball carrier to see who he's tackling its targeting. It wasn't malicious at all but a giant of a man making a solid tackle. That rule is trash

It is natural to try and use your helmet to protect yourself as well as lead. It is hard plastic. I still think the penalty should be that both players go out in targeting. This will keep players from cheating. If you both go out and both can come back in, play on. This sitting players for a half a game helps deep teams and penalizes teams like us more. Officiating today is a joke. Too much money in college football. We desperately need more ability to review. Most calls from last night appeared to be called correctly.

We've seen this double standard for years and years. That video was a perfect example. It's a classic look at what the penalty was designed to avoid. With Middleton, not even close to the same thing. There was no intent to spear or injure. The back of his helmet was touching his shoulder pads. He couldn't cock his head back any further than it already was. Head contact in this sport is unavoidable. It's why we wear helmets. They're going to hit.

Just a little common sense in applying this rule would go a long way, but with these SEC refs, that's asking the impossible. I've watched several games from various leagues and the SEC officials are by far the worst in all of college football.

Clearly it does seem to be the case. I just watched Tyler Byrd take a head shot from USC #10 well after the ball had been dropped right in front of an official and the company idiot Austin defended the no call. Much more egregious than Middleton, but no biggie according to the officials.

Targeting: yadda yadda yadda helmet,
lowering head, etc. Tennessee players will be given penalty automatically, all others will be called on case by case basis.

I had a good live view from our section of a hit on Tyler Byrd that was definitely targeting. Then they showed it about 5 or 6 times on the jumbotron everybody was booing. Same with the blatant facemask (on Fant I believe) penalty that was somehow missed/ignored. The cocks got away with a couple late hits like on the JJ touchdown where he got pushed head first into the brick wall) that should have been unsportsmanlike. Just sayin.
