So targeting is....

I hate to keep bringing up the refs, in part because we have the benefit of "instant replay", but dang, they're horrible ! Just missing obvious, egregious penalties. I'm proud of the boys for staying focused and not letting it effect them. Kudos to Coach Pruitt for chewing them a new one.
That face mask missed call was as bad as it gets

Rules are rules but if they truly want to help defenseless players quiet letting the QB’s get drilled 2 or 3 steps after they let ball go!

They get triggered now when they see two helmets touch. It’s absurd.

Seeing two helmets touch reminds the SEC zebras of their 'special nighttime moments' together in the bushes at the city park and gets them all hot and bothered, probably.

Targeting (called spearing when I was playing) is a real issue. This current application is just BS and will kill the game. These are call are so subjective and literally change the outcome of the games.

It was targeting. Middleton knew it. Pruitt knew it. The rule puts the defense at a disadvantage, but that was the correct call according to the rule.

Just setting here remembering when head hunting was encouraged.

That doesn’t Have to be part of the game. There is a place for targeting, but the rule’s application is what’s wrong. Too many factors go into a play that it’s almost impossible to apply the rule fairly except in cases where it’s obvious.

Lowering your head to tackle the ball carrier OR hitting the ball carrier in the helmet, regardless of whether you drop your head.

The “rules analysts” are worthless. Middleton did not drop his head, but he did hit the QB in the helmet. Clearly, folks are confused.

The Middleton hit has about as clear cut case of targeting as I’ve seen this year. 3 flags came in. He knew it too the second he made contact. But there should’ve been targeting on the Byrd hit and they should’ve looked at the hit on jg. It wasn’t to the head but the defender absolutely lead with his head to a defenseless player.

Targeting is not taking a cheap shot at a defenseless WR three yards beyond the end zone; especially if they are wearing orange and white!

More frustrated with the no call on Byrd. It was late and contact to the head,

My biggest problem with the rule is this it isn’t applied consistently.

There was absolutely no force involved with the incidental helmet contact. For that reason, it shouldn’t have been called....just like the Darrel Taylor roughing the passer penalty last week!
