The analysis on this is off. There are actually 347 D1 college basketball schools. In addition, there are 32 automatic bids. So, you can only win your own conference or get an at-large bid. That takes 31 spots away that UT cannot get. Therefore, you are talking about playing for 37 spots. Now, a team playing in a low major has a less of a shot than a team playing in a P5 conference, but the team in the P5 conference plays tougher competition.

Nonetheless, your 34% is not correct.

Your "facts" are not facts. They are speculation at best. You do understand that everything written by those pundits isn't correct? Not everything a respectable reporter writes is correct, either. I've been on the receiving end of factually incorrect information. So, remember that everything is open to interpretation if you're willing to actually do that.

I have had personal experiences where the media reported it incorrectly. Relying on the media to present facts is funny, especially in today's media.

I do have respect for those media members who try to report the right way. But, in the end, if you are relying on anything but personal observation, you're vouching for someone else that this story is correct. We know how that can work.

It’s more than a little silly that anyone would take an LA Times report and lend it such ironclad accuracy and totally dismiss Barnes’ own words about the same issue. The same guy who was “honest to a fault” about his feelings for UCLA and how close he was to taking that job. The same guy who was at the center of those discussions and negotiations.

Does Barnes have a reason to spin the story to a point that paints him in a positive light? Sure he does. But an LA Times reporter is getting his info second hand, at best, and from someone who obviously has equal motive to spin the story to put UCLA in a positive light after a disastrous coaching search.

To be clear, I am not making a case for who is being honest in this situation, but why Barnes is immediately viewed as the crooked liar and the LA Times reporter and the source of his story is viewed as the bastion of integrity and accuracy is puzzling.

It's not as puzzling when any party has an agenda. Someone totally without bias and who is willing to be open minded about these situations would give credence to all viewpoints. I have no idea who is more accurate in this situation, but my common sense tells me to believe Barnes because he is brutally honest. Just ask a couple of players who came back to the bench last night after a mistake.

Shoot...Cuonzo lost to Austin Peay one year. Speaking of Austin Peay...back in the early 70s they made tourney when it was 32 teams...made it to sweet 16 only to get robbed in OT by Kentucky. The refs screwed the Govs badly. Then made it the next year and got beat by ND. This with Fly Williams. It shows how one dynamic player can have such an effect. That's what we need. A true superstar that can carry a team. Fly is in jail now for drug selling. Sad story. Also in late 80s Govs beat Illinois to advance against Providence... and again lost in OT. That Providence team advanced to final four. Even a team like AP can have special years. We should expect a lot from UT...with all the money and resources afforded the program now. Hopefully next year we get back to "special".

I saw Fly play a few times in person....He was a talent. I was living in Paducah KY while he was at AP. I was at the game when AP and Fly played at Murray State.....All the Murray students in the student section had fly swatters....In the end Fly had around 30 and all the fly swatters were laying on the floor. :)

The guy(s) complaining about how much a coach makes are the ones that create problems. Your argument is that what you pay should result in what is achieved (2nd highest paid coach should make the finals every year). It ignores all of the variables of running a team. I remember guys complaining when Fulmer made $2 million/year. It is not your money so you really shouldn't care. As fans we should desire good coaches at Tennessee and for Tennessee to do what it takes to get and retain good coaches.

Barnes is a very good coach and you can see it in the development of his players. While he is our coach we will have the chance to be good to really good in basketball. What else do you want?

If we were all satisfied with the status quo nothing would ever change. so if you are happy live with it and let the gloomers complain. you should thank them that you aren't celebrating the birthday of the queen or working 15 hours 6 days a week. Better yet on a message board, put them on ignore.

We've had really good basketball teams. Our basketball history is in another league above Kentucky's football history. We're not much more of a football school. It's really close. Except for the natty in football, our basketball has been as successful in the SEC as our football in my lifetime and that's 57 years. We've never had stretches of mediocre to bad basketball like we've had in football. Don't get me wrong, we had some bad basketball teams in the early 90s but that was about a 5 year period. We've been nationally relevant far more often in basketball than football too.
