What will it take to get UT football back to winning big? I'm talking about 95-01 big. Well, the anwer is: a lot of things. But #1 on the list to winning big is bringing in elite talent, at every position, on a consistent annual basis.

So, this requires DD and staff compete for and sign their share of 4-5 star guys from QB to DE to CB. To do so, this will also require they go head-to-head with Saban, Richt, Meyer, Fisher, Miles, Spurrier, and Davis to get those players. Do this, the odds of UT wins big again increase very quickly.

Okay....so now that what should be the obvious is out of the way....the fundamental question:
How do you go get them to come to UT?

The answer to this is also obvious: you provide for these elite players what they are looking for. The fact is most of these elite young players are from poor, black communities. They don't have much, and football is their ticket not only out...but directly to the riches and fame of the NFL. This is, by far, undeniably, the #1 MOST important piece to these elite players making their college choice. Sure, there are other factors, such as winning, coaching relationship, campus atmosphere, early PT opportunity, etc. But these elite players KNOW how good they are, and above all they want as close to a guarantee that this program will get them where they want to go. Also, FYI, this may come as a shock to many, but most of these kids aren't a fan on the same level as you or I, and really don't care or factor loyalty into their decision.

So, if you agree with this or accept it for truth, then you'll likely also agree with me that DD's tenure will be 100% determined by his ability to get these players to come to UT in 2011-2012. Folks, this is nothing other than the Saban priniciple, Saban system, Saban program I am describing, and I honestly expected to see more of it emerging from the shadows at this point. These next two classes will dictate whatever momentum is established in the future of the program. He can certainly sell the NFL, just by pointing to the 6 players just drafted. He'll also have to sell kids he coached at LSU as part of that staff to convince kids he has a personal track record of knowing the game, the system, and how to get them there. All those other coaches listed before are also doing this in the same living rooms, and Dooley MUST play poker at this high-stakes, no-limit table to have any chance of succeeding.

Sell the NFL pipeline, convince them that UT has always gotten them there and he knows how to as well, and force pen to paper with the big dogs of the 2011-12 classes. Once they're on campus, they'll embrace the tradition and discipline of the program, and team underpinned by elite talent will form. Then....UT will win big again.

That's a lot of typing just to say that Dooley needs to recruit well in order to be successful here.

Derek Dooley’s not going to win 95-01 level, not even close. I would be very surprised if he ever wins at an 07 level.

You realize Kiffin is no longer our coach, right? Dooley doesn't seem to stress the NFL as a selling point.

From what I’ve heard from recruits (Da’Rick Rogers in particular) he’s selling La. Tech’s improvement under him. The 5*’s will come in in droves to be La. Tech North IMO.

I just realized he could sell recruits on UT becoming the next LA Tech.

The hiring decision makes more sense now.

he needs to sell tennessee and he needs to sell playing time.

how do you sell the nfl when you have put no one there?

Use your head, he can sell that he would have put boat loads of Bama Tight Ends in the NFL had he actually coached at Bama.

Lance Thompson and Chuck Smith will get kids. If your a D lineman why would you not wanna play for Chuck. It will be o.k. people

Exactly. Being Rex Ryan’s towel boy goes a lot further than it used to. He also has a great track record recruiting wise.

So, um, the Saban System is just selling recruits on future professional opportunities? Wow, I figured that had been around a long time.

something tells me that CDD's pitch involves the words "processes" and "philosophies" and the phrase "i'll never tell you to trust me"

The last time a guy coached at Louisiana Tech for more than a year and did worse than Dooley was 1929. But at least he pressure washed their stadium last year.

I'm trying to figure out which D1 head coaches are "NOT" selling recruits on future professional opportunities. :hi:

There is a non-zero probability that he could have fewer wins than any coach in UT history this year.

Yet, there is no other coach better than Dooley who would take the job. Be glad we have him. :)

Are you talking about the racist part where you mention black guys from disadvantaged areas? If the only thing you have to offer players is a guarenteed path to the NFL, then what separates college football from the league?

Not much, as evidenced by the winners in college football coming from the NFL. (Saban, Carroll).

to piggy-back on this question, i'm wondering if the op is implying that there is only one thing that these underprivileged young men are interested in and that's money? surely none of them care about having equal access (for the first time) to an education?

I'm been going to games for 45 years. 95-01 happened only once in 45 years. I'll be dead before it happens again and it may never happen again, for Tennessee

This is why Fulmer secured a spot in UT history that should make him proud, forever.

Exactly. For the expectations to be 95-01 would be very unrealistic. All I expect is an SEC Championship once every 3-5 years, and a MNC every 15-20 years.
