So in the end Fulmer went down Swinging and Spurrier is a quitter?

"I'll do a complete audit of the entire program”. - CPF in USA Today on November 26, 2005

One of the funniest moments from his reign of terror.

In spite of the blind faith of many on here... Phil destroyed the program, quite sad to look back on it, always amazes me that some here just continue to sugar coat the end of his reign. He went out kicking and screaming... not fighting or swinging.

I'd call it more like the cow that was producing milk, but not quite as well as it could be, then it started getting kinda sickly, so you eventually had to put it out of its misery

Fulmer is in the HOF for a reason. Hamilton was a complete arse for forcing him out. Along with the sheeple that followed him and gave their support to the dumbest decision made at UT in the last half a century.

Now UGA is now doing the same thing. They think Smart is going to come in and just start winning? Lol*

Everyone who continues to talk bad about Fulmer is part of what's wrong with football. He gave his entire life to Tennessee. He is without a doubt all VOL. During the last few years of his time at Tennessee the program and the school underwent negative changes out of his control. The loses of Joe Johnson and Doug Dickey coupled by the takeover from the academic side of the board put undo stressors on CPF and the football program. You heard Dave Hart day one give reasons for problems and changes the school needed to make outside the Athletic dept. Hart just said in his pressor the other day .... 7 Presidents since Joe Johnson. Fulmer gave us SEC Championships and a National championship. 150/50 I love Tennessee but I would have pushed back against Hamilton and made them pay me too. Hamilton was an idiot,
The ole ball sack won one NC in 96... Only because he couldn't beat Bowden. He's self centered and quit on usc. Fulmer struggled to beat Fl, Bowden struggled to beat Miami...
Satan is the first coach in modern times to beat up on everybody. That's changing FAST! Lay off out NC Hall of Fame coach!

How can people come on here and bash Fulmer and praise Spurrier, yet claim to be a Vol fan? I admit I respect Spurrier as a coach but you won't see me hold him to a higher esteem than I will the man who helped bring home the only Championship for UT in fifty years. And the only one I've witnessed from any of my favorite teams in my lifetime.

I've said before and stand by it. We have a segment of fans who are afflicted with self loathing. They just can't bring themselves to enjoy anything positive about UT.

Fulmer needed to go because he got to content with mediocrity. Yes spurrier is a quitter. Should have not started season if he wasn't gonna finish it.

Seems like every coach turns into a mediocre burn out after about 10 years at any stop. Fulmer's last half or third of his tenure was average.

Giving him one more year wouldn't have been a horrible plan since he did get to Atlanta in 2007. I doubt that he would have done any better than Kiffin in 2009, but there wasn't much downside to offering him an ultimatum to win plus another year.

Great point. That would have been a much better plan. Tom Landry may be an exception to your 10 year rule, but burn out did get him at the end.

There are a few dozen programs that would like to have been "destroyed" in the same manner. It is not difficult to "sugar coat" his career, including the end. One year away from the championship. How have we done since then?

Name of programs?

Go ahead and "sugarcoat" 7-5 average over the last 4 years of CPF.

The 2015 team is by far the best product TN has put on the field in over 10 years. We are a much better team than the last few teams CPF put on the field.

That's a great point. 2001 should have beaten a hypothetical matchup with team 219. 2003 and 2004 and possibly 2007 could be close, but I'd lean towards 219. 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2008 should be cake walks for 219.

I see your point Gramps, but I was looking at his entire career as the head coach. I would think a great many teams would like to have that overall record.

Yep, and it's because he won a bunch of games while head coach

What was our record in 1796 (or there about)?

I would suspect South Carolina is going to be down for a few years. Usually, when a coach leaves, they can see the writing on the wall that the team they have is going to struggle. Very few walk away when next year's team is plain awesome. The mix of a depleted roster and stronger nearby opponents in Clemson and North Carolina might mean South Carolina goes through a period like Tennessee has had since 2008.
