so how do we compensate for a weak OL?

The two defenses we've faced so far are probably a bit weaker than what we'll face collectively with our next 10 opponents (even lowly Old Dominion ran the ball better against App State yesterday than we did, averaging 5.1 ypc.)

We were not a juggernaut offensively last year and it appears we've taken a step or two back so far season. Much of the blame for our woes has been laid at the feet of our OL, while DeBord's playcalling & Dobbs' arm/decision making have also been singled out as weaknesses (along with Mahoney & Azzanni). At this point, it's probably unrealistic to expect sudden improvement from any of these parties.

After two games our offense is:
* 63rd nationally in rushing (183 yards per game)
* 85th in rushing ypc (4.11)
* 118th in passing (141.5 yards per game)
* 104th in yards per pass attempt (5.9)
* 111th in total offense (324.5)
* 112th in yards per play (4.74)

Starting 2-0 is better than the alternative and winning 8 in a row is a big accomplishment, but the above stats are inexcusable given the talent we have at our disposal, IMO, and repeat performances will likely result in 3-4 losses. While I appreciate how opportunistic we were last night, generating 45 points with just 330 yards of total offense, we can't always count on opponent miscues to jump-start our scoring.

Given our mediocre OL play so far, what are 3-4 things you'd do differently starting next week if you were the OC?

Starting the right 5 is the first part to helping.

Jack Jones HAS to play. All there is to it.

I think maybe you really consider trying some other guys too. I know blowing a redshirt sucks, but this is an emergency IMO

Gotta script our first plays better. Need to expect teams to try and stunt after watching our porous interior. Need plays to counter that

Those stats are telling. IMO, the Oline needs to fire off the ball and stop the directing traffic approach. They need to play meaner as well.

Quick passes, ala 1 step drop (quick slants, quick outs, back shoulder fades, TE dump to middle of field)

Run, Dobbs, Run:

Power I FORMATION!!! Stop with the slow developing run plays. Will keep defense honest and can set up play action

Put Wiesman back at center

If we do not get this O-line fixed we will lose 4 games. And i think we need Kamara and Hurd on field at same time. If rush from D-line is comming dump it off to Hurd or Kamara and let them make plays. Then it will slow the D-line down.

Last night VT was rushing 3 guys and dropping 8 into coverage. The 3 guys from VT was getting pressure on Dobbs. Come on man.

Hire a new o-line coach this offseason. Mahoney had a chance to get his players and coach them up bit he has failed.

Best lineup for us will be Richmond,Robertson,Weisman,J Jones,Hall

I think Richmond will show a lot of improvement as the season progresses.

It's only a matter of finding the right combo of linemen. we have the horses. We played a lot of OL last night.

That was bad. I just figured the others that were standing around were waiting for a late blitz. At some point you got to help your brother.

How JJ doesn't start is beyond me. He brings toughness and a nasty attitude. After the first play, JJ pointed at the defensive tackle and said something. He dominated the dude after that play. All it takes is one special player to make a line better and I think JJ is that player.

D's feast of weak lines... put 8 up there and running anywhere is tough. As well, with just a moderate degree of pass coverage skills they can limit options in the passing game.... so the O-line has to step up or rotate new guys like they did last night, it worked for a series.

This line is not very good. Maybe they need to punt the zone blocking scheme. Even Robertson struggled last night. They better get it together before Florida. Whiffs, misses and getting flat beat is our reality.

I know this is beating a dead horse but keeping the defense guessing with the play call helps. At this point, even the fans know when we're going to run the ball and where we're going to run it.

This is good... isn't Big Charles still on the O line? Try him out... also, quick slant passes ... maybe Josh Smith will show up and ball.

I think it might be worth a try at this point to scrap any scheme and just plan on saying, if there's a defender near me block him

Expand the playcalling (maybe they're waiting for uf)

Give more running backs more opportunities

New coach and new staff will be the only way it gets better, just being honest. No possible way our team is full of kids that complete as freshmen then regress after being in CBJ 's system. Name one skill player that has honestly gotten better starting yr 4? If this doesn't change soon our recruiting will start to fall off cause if the casual fan noticed how bad our highly rated recruits play after being in our system, think other staffs will point this out? Just frustrated knowing how many we returned we should be freaking dominant, not relying on luck

You could roll the QB, draw plays, Quick hitter throws, timing throws- like fades, use a TE/RB to chip, throw to the TE in the seam (that will keep LB honest) , screen passes, 3 and 5 step drops, Quick slants
