So...How did Tennessee used to Play?

Pickens was on the '91 team. Harper and Morgan graduated after '90.

Still, it was a potent offense that sputtered at times.

I went to the UF game the week before then turned around and went to the Bama game a week later. Somehow I had more money as a student...:thud:

Indeed they did! I always associate not utilizing the passing game properly against Bama with those guys! We didn’t try in 90’ and quit in 91’!

Playing with purpose! The purpose was to destroy the other teams willingness to effectively participate.

My favorite Johnny Majors saying: "He knocked the snot bubbles out of him!"

:D

I am a lifelong VOL, 41 years old, have gone to games since a was 3 in 1980. Decade of Dominance is my favorite show, period...

That said..how did we ever lose the games we did back then? Morgan, Harper, Pickens...3 NFL wr... and at least 2 NFL tailbacks at all times..AMD defenders like Chuck Smith that were all pros...those teams were so loaded, of Majors was a top shelf coach we would have at least 2 or 3 more championships. Amazing. Some of those teams had 2 or 3 times the talent of any team we have had since fulmer...seriously. 2 or 3 times as much, and if you count number of NFL players drafted, it's 5 or 6 times as much talent...sick. Dang you gators

I was at that game. When it rained it poured! Literally!

That was my first gators game. Not only did it pour down rain but the stadium was packed. Shoulder to shoulder blocks from the stadium.

If you would have passed out walking to the stadium, then you would have never hit the ground because the crowd would have jut pushed you along.

Somehow my mind went back to that bs game against Alabubba that year. Kicked them all over the field in the first half just to have a 9-3 lead at the half. They couldn’t stop Kelly to Pickens, Harper, and Morgan, so naturally Johnny shut down our passing game in the third quarter, let them steal the momentum, and lost once again to a another Bama team that we should have beaten!

I think I remember that game. My brother and I sat in the top rows of South end. Game looked like it took place between the 40s. Almost as bad as getting beat by Miss State when my boss in Huntsville gave us free tickets and sat next to cowbells in Neyland all afternoon.

During Fulmer days we had some beef on the lines that could get the job done. Ditto talent at RB and WR. I wasnT always impressed with Johnny Chavis’ bend but don’t break defense, but the wins were many and the games were fun to watch. I’d like to see those kinda win streaks again.

Short answer: we used to play good football.

It's long passed time to get back to doing that but as long as we start with this season, I look forward to the ride.

1990 and 1991 teams were 2 of the best Vol teams in my lifetime. Chuck Webb got hurt in 90 in the first game and Tony Thompson took over. Stewart and Hayden were true freshmen in 91. I've always wondered how things would have turned out with a healthy Chuck Webb those years.

How about the Fiesta Bowl that year vs Penn State?!?! It was the same thing. We were moving the ball at will in the first half and they were 3 downs and out on every series but we only had a 10-7 lead at halftime. They went on to win 42-17 off turnovers.

Fulmer was OC back then and deserved some heat (and got it). It wasn't just Majors' fault. Phil hated throwing the ball when we had the lead (however small) and red zone efficiency that year was atrocious... and Dale Carter fumbled too many punts and kicks and Andy Kelly threw waaaay too many interceptions.

Not defending anyone, but I still hear this today. " when you throw the ball only 3 things can happen and 2 of them are bad "

Webb really blew it by not returning to school in '91. One of the worst decisions I've ever seen a player make. What was he thinking?
