And I got watch some FOOTBALL. Thoughts:

- I wasn't expecting many true Frosh to contribute, but several did. Doneiko Slaughter had some good plays, Morven Joseph got a tackle, and then there was Tyler Baron....

- Speaking of Tyler Baron - my goodness, this dude is going to be a good one. He just flat gets after it and was in the Gamecock backfield repeatedly, registering 2 tackles for loss. I especially loved that one where he grabbed the running back and simply hung on by the ankle till "a host of Volunteers" arrived. Going to be great fun watching him.

- I had to grab my roster to see who #51 was on the DL. He only registered one stop, but he seemed to be around the ball a lot to my untutored eyes and looks really nimble and quick for a guy that size. It turned out to be redshirt frosh Elijah Simmons. Another one to watch.

- 2.5 sacks for Deandre Johnson.

- You might have noticed I've only mentioned the D so far. Well....

- Saw some bright spots in our young receivers, as well as Brandon Johnson's steady Sr. presence. Loved that one-handed grab.

- Still don't understand the maddening tendency we have to pass pass pass at times when it seems like we should run. Yes, the ground game struggled at times. But I was amazed at that series with about 8 minutes to go when we had a short field to work with and could have ground up some clock, but instead pass pass pass.

- Another tendency -- chunking the ball downfield on fades, etc., when we only need like 2 yards on 3rd down. Hmmm...

- JG still seems hit or miss. And the relatively short throws can be scary with that laser-like delivery. When he did the bow and arrow thing following that bomb for a TD, I couldn't help remembering Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's famous words from the poem "The Arrow and the Song" -- "I shot an arrow into the air, it fell to Earth I know not where..." (which was also referenced in a famous Twilight Zone episode called 'The Gift' -- hmmm....). But I will cut him a bit of slack considering lack of practice time, spring ball, familiarity with new guys, etc.

- The eternal optimist in me still hopes JG can be a serviceable QB, if we are going to insist on using him. I'm not the hater type - simply not a good vibe to throw out to the universe. I will root like heck. Just hit the guy when he's wide open. A game manager like a McCarron or Fromm likely would have won that game by a couple scores. For a change we have enough talent and depth around him to roll up yardage, no gun-slinging required. Though I suspect his current backups are gun-slingers too. Come on, Bailey! Hoping we get up on Mizzou by enough to at least give somebody else like Shrout some snaps to see how far they have come.

- Had to wonder what a difference Cade Mays might have made lined up next to Trey.

- Actually pleased with a lot of things considering COVID, the lack of practice time, etc. We're not chopped liver anymore.

- Neat to see another true frosh ice the game with that heads-up play on that last punt - Jimmy Holiday. Got the feeling from Pruitt's comments that his heart was in his throat on every special teams play. Nice to see them slam the door on USC.

- The vets like Henry TT and others showed up. Loved seeing him shove the DB to the ground and force his way toward the end zone on the pick six.

- Chandler 6.6 yards per carry.

- I love WINS however they come. I'll take beating USC on the road under the lights, or any SEC opponent, for that matter, however I can get it.

Edited to add: - I didn't mean to make it sound like JG's TD throw was a gift -- it was right on the money! That's the thing about JG. He makes some fabulous throws on some of the tough passes and then those short ones make you scratch your head. Here's hoping he rips Mizzou a new one.

Great post. This is the kind of stuff I come here for.

Outstanding points about the freshmen. With no spring ball and the weirdness of everything, we really had no idea which freshmen might contribute. I also noticed Spraggins in at Guard on a couple of occassions.
Greg....
On here you have to separate the wheat from the chaff.

I would say the bad coaching decisions were as costly as JG's overthrows in this one.

That 4th and 1 where we sent Cimaglia to kick instead of going for it in USCjr territory was atrocious. Gave them a ton of momentum. The probability of picking up one yard was probably 95%.

Then when we got the ball back with 8 minutes left and threw three straight times when we had momentum and had run on them pretty easily the entire second half was baffling. I couldn't freaking believe it.

Thanks, great evaluation.....I could have done without the JG shooting the arrow BS, and got a laugh out of the song comparison you made.

Especially given the crazy off season I'm surprised we had no turnovers and we didn't have a bunch of penalties like what you expect from a team with as little practice as we've had. I know some people take issue with Jeremy Bank's penalties and I totally understand that, but I do like the level of aggression they played with. They did not look afraid of contact. I honestly was afraid we would come out and look like georgia in did the first half.

I agree about the 4th down and one FG attempt. I could not figure out why, only thing I could think of was possibly JP thought it might come down to a FG at the end and he wanted to give Cimaglia and FG team little confidence before that.

Yeah thats the only reason I could think of. Give Cimaglia a rep because he's suppose to be automatic.

Chaney came oh so close to losing this game for our team. I have a simple philosophy for offense, and it is:

First Downs, Not Touchdowns.

If we grind the ball down the field and focus on first downs, we will eventually get touchdowns. We will also keep the ball out of our opponents hands. Case in point is our last possession. We have an amazing front line and a pair of dual threat running backs. Pound it up the middle like we had been doing all day long. Don't rely upon JG for completions. He might get some, but don't rely upon him. Rely on what works, for when we run the ball and stay in bounds, the defense either calls time outs or the clock continues to burn valuable time. Two incompletions on the last drive is grounds to fire someone IMO. Seriously, one first down and game is over. The punter saved the job for the person that calls our Offensive plays - which I assume is Chaney.

I was proud of the team but embarrassed way too often by the play calling. Yes we have won 7, but not without some yeomen luck. I want to win, but win convincingly and not having to keep a defibrillator by my side during all UT games. And on a side note, JG continues to play to his abilities each game. I hope our backups are hungry in the wings.

Even when CJC was at Georgia with a stable full of NFL running backs he would get pass happy.

It is simply scary as HELL to think that Chaney does not understand that we need 10 yards to WIN a game on the road. We don't need 15 or 20 yards, we need 10. His pass happiness needs to be curtailed by CJP - and I hope he has a come to Jesus meeting with him soon about this. Call playing MUST be spot on at all times, esp at critical times - such as the END of the friggin' game.

He‘s 6’4” and 200 lbs
He's a stick, no muscle tone much at all. He's also raw and inexperienced. I just don't believe we'll see much production from him this year, especially if Johnson and Palmer stay healthy. I don't think we'll see much production this year from any of the Freshman WRs other then Beckwith if he gets back healthy. They will play and shine in spots this year but I don't think that it will happen a bunch, next season is a whole different story though and they'll definitely be needed.
