Not a gift. He negotiated it. Whether or not you think he earned it is irrelevant, but there were many VNers that wanted to give him an extension after his first year.

yep. there's going to be some unrealistic optimism coming, and that's fine.

no one knows for sure right now. all you can do is look at what is being done presently, and either you like what you see or you don't.

none of it will matter until we play again, and it really won't matter that much probably until we get in to year 2.

the rest will be whether or not they can take advantage of any opportunities to do more than expected, that will assuredly be presented, over the next couple seasons.

that's really what this will boil down to. realistically, the 2018 team shouldn't be better than an 7/8 win team. there's still depth issues, there will be some youth, and you have a brand new staff in year one. growing pains will happen.

but there will still be an opportunity, or two, to do something more than is expected. win a game, or two, they maybe shouldn't. there will also be opportunities to lose a game they shouldn't, and how will they prevent that from happening?

i keep going back to it...but in CBJ's first two year's he had opportunities at both, and missed big opportunities against UGA in 13, and FL in 14. conversely, should have probably lost to USCe in 13 and didn't, and should have beaten VAndy in 13 and didn't.

those are the types of games that this staff will find themselves in over the next couple years, and will define the actual direction of the program.

so until we get to those situations....it's wait and see.:thumbsup:

Also, Georgia will not be better next year. They're losing something like 16 starters/meaningful contributors I believe. So that just isn't true. They likely will still win the East and perhaps even make the playoff but they won't be better. Sorry.

Honestly I can't tell if your problem is with our hiring of Pruitt or his decision to coach Alabama through the playoff.

Regardless, the fact that we currently have a top 15 recruiting class (which will hopefully end up even better) really ought to be enough to make you & others not complain about his staying on with Bama. Whether the "national exposure" people said we'd get is playing a part in this class or not, who knows... But it's clear he is pulling together a really solid class either way. And it's an especially good class given the circumstances he came into and what a dumpster fire we were. I was expecting a down year in recruiting given our mess of a coaching search.

(Yes, I know on-field results are what matter. Yes, I know we once raved about Butch's recruiting as well. But it's too early for this pissing and moaning. Seriously.)

I’m expecting significant improvements but not sure how it will translate to wins vs loses.

I was very impressed by how they made adjustments in the second half. That is what good coaches do.

I feel neither more nor less confident in CJP. The success at Bama is all Saban's. Pruitt now has to try and emulate that at a school that isn't stocked with 5 star talent and has been severely negatively affected by a former incompetent head coach.

Good damn luck to him.

Pruitt will be HC - not coaching for BJ. You really have to wonder after past performances as DC how much of that debacle was Shoop and how much was BJ.

Before we start jumping around talking about how nasty our defense will be and all this other ****...let’s rememebr 1 thing. Alabama has a whole lot better players on the sideline than Tennessee does in its starting 22. Until CJP gets his players in here, im not expecting anything other than an improvement from a 4 Win program. Let’s pump the brakes and let the guy build a contender

it's the big picture stuff in running a program like this , managing a staff, managing the roster etc...that is. the good news, he's not a guy that's coached at WMU and CINN and the like. he's seen Bama, GA, and FSU at or near elite levels and what those kinds of programs look like.

that's a much better place to start than we did with the last 3 guys we had in here. if for no other reason than that, that adds a lot to the confidence level.


agreed. it will always come down to what happens on the field....and we have a ways to go to start seeing what that will be, much less what that will be with it being "his" program....so i'm excited, i'm fairly confident and optimistic, but i think it's probably ok to pump some brakes right now. and probably ok to do so for this upcoming season...at least up to a point....if you know what i mean.

for what can be judged so far, he's passing with flying colors as far as i'm concerned....

Pruitt already impacted recruiting significantly by dropping a few of Butch's recruits and picking up others that more fit his style. The telling part is going to be how well the current players adapt to the new staff and the new players. You have to assume that many of the current players fit more in the mold of the players Pruitt chose not to recruit.

Old staff and new staff (players) don't always mesh as smoothly as you'd like when there's a change in management. Doug Dickey left UT as a very successful coach and didn't do well at FL because the players wanted a different coach and a different style of play. I'd bet our transition will work well, but it doesn't take many rotten apples who don't adapt to spoil things.

i don't care if it is a rebuilding year. With our schedule, 6 wins is not in any way remotely acceptable.

Pruitt, Sherrer, Rocker, Rumph, Friend, Gillespie, etc... can all coach, which is a welcome change. Who knows how Pruitt will fare with the responsibilities of the head man on his shoulders?

What I do know is I’m a heck of a lot more comfortable with coaching and scheme, which hasn’t been the case for over a decade.

Vols will win 8 games next season. Book it. Losses to Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, and one more. We will be competitive in all.

He’s worked for Saban at Bama cepting 3 seasons since Saban’s first season at Bama, and never coached a down on defense or recruited a player. Pretty sobering facts. :no:
