So, about that OC position.... (Merged)

The NFL’s example of focusing on the measurable in the draft as a means to victory plus bama’s dominance based upon its treasure trove of talent garnered through recruiting prove the thesis that “without the Jimmies and Joes” you can’t win, or more team size strength, speed and intelligence increases the probability of victory. Assuming the truth of the thesis, why is coach Pruitt wrong when he says “the OC position is overrated” if the goal is wins? If recruiting is paramount we need recruiters who bring in the players more than an OC. An average OC can win with great talent. Is this the mind of Pruitt?

I think the key words in your statement is your partial quote of Pruitt, stating "the OC position is overrated". It likely is given too much credit for success and blame for failure of a team. Players have got to execute and sometimes improvise when either the play call isn't good, a teammate blows their assignment, or the defense has the right play to stop the play call. Unlike the NFL, college coaches have to be great recruiters as well as evaluators of top talent(unfortunately). That is why Nick Saban has won multiple mythical championships, will likely win this year, and may win a couple more before he mercifully quits.

Pruitt wasn’t wrong but to be more precise, he said “sometimes overrated” which is an accurate assessment imho.

So all the games have been played except 1.. Fire sale and NFL regular season is done. So what are we waiting on now? Big Jim's approval? I'll hang up and listen..

UGA last night is a prime example it's not just about jimmies and joes.....great game planning , adjustments, and getting your team prepared....

Kirby better keep on recruiting top classes. His coaching isn't going to make any difference. Seems most guys that leave Saban's empire tend to look mortal and downright pedestrian after...That's why i'm not sold on Pruitt, and if the writing is on the wall after year 3 i hope we don't hang on to save a buck like we did Botch..

Well guys I’m completely lost on who our next OC will be. For sure thought it was gonna be Yurich or Sark but it’s not looking that way. Looks like a hire from within I suppose. I just hope it’s Osvet if that’s the case. I will lose my mind if it’s will friend.

Correct, it’s a 3 part formula to be successful.

1. Recruit top talent that fit the system and schemes you run. Identify future leaders and potential impact players.

2. Get them in the program and make them bigger, stronger and faster than before. Develop them into impact players.

3. Coach them up and develop their skills to run your system. Teach them everything about it so they are prepared for gameday and develop leaders on the field that hold each other accountable.

Just my two cents.

I think the man is on staff now...Weinke as OC.

I would not be shocked. He might be good. He might become QB coach and passing game coordinator with someone else getting the OC title.
We're not in a position to really know these guys. Pruitt has worked with them.
Pruitt may be thinking that he has some good options on staff now, but would prefer a home run hire if he can find one. I just hope he makes a good choice.

In sum and substance,

1. Recruiting
2. Strength and Conditioning
3. Coaching and game planning.

Recruiting Is clearly the most important.

Just my two cents.

Swain confirmed Sark and Pruitt have talked about the OC job. He said it’s the move that make sense if you put the pieces together on Pruitt and Sark.

Said expect Sark, Canada or Chaney at this point.

Did I miss something overnight?

I think it’s Sarkisian until it’s not. He knows Pruitt from his time at Alabama and he a good fit for what Pruitt wants to run on offense.

@gunner

I think it’s Sark too. It just seems like the perfect fit in scheme Pruitt wants. And I think he trusts Sark to run the O

Let’s be real, Pruitt micromanaged Helton a lot and it’s clear Helton is kind of warning people of that. Think it’s pretty obvious.

He did, Helton was also a coach that Pruitt had never worked with and not a proven OC.

I think/hope if Pruitt got a guy he trusts, proven OC & has worked with it won’t be a micromanager situation.

And with Pruitt/Helton situation. Pruitt has never been a HC before. He probably wasn’t fully ready to be a HC yet either going into last year.

But it was what Tennessee could get because of the state of the program. He seems like he is going to be a good HC, but it won’t be without growning pains

Agree 100%, but why did CJP hire him in the first place if he wasn't proven and didn't trust him?

I don't think he did at first. I think he started to after he mentioned that he needed to pay attention more to the offensive side of the ball, after that I believe he may have micromanaged him. If Helton is saying that, then maybe he should've done a better job. If the HC doesn't trust you and has to stay over your shoulder all the time then obviously you're not doing something right.

So if Pruitt does hire Sark, I'd about bet you won't see him mess with the offense as much, if at all.

@peaygolf

I saw a interview with Pruitt before saying they meet during a recruiting trip while he was at Hoover & always stayed in touch. Liked the way he recruited & became friends.

But having the same thoughts on the phone and during the heat of a game seemed to be different. And that happens. You can have a coach talk to you about his philosophy and then see them call a game when pressure is on completely different

I'm thinking if UGA keeps Chaney, we get Sarkisian. If UGA wants to part with Chaney, we get Chaney and they get Sarkisian. Just my 2 cents.....

Just an FYI...I know nothing, but I have an idea maybe, perhaps with recruiting, just pitching the idea of a coordinator doing what the recruit would like and allowing the interim recruiter (can't recall his name) to continue until signing day, and announce who it is after so it doesn't impact recruiting one way or the other......just an option, could be wrong, it happened to me once before

Pruitt sees the game very differently than did the previous coach. Jones' "the system is infallible if properly executed" statements told you all you need to know. He thought he could out scheme and out smart the other teams. Pruitt is much more fundamental. Get the biggest, fastest, smartest, toughest, most competitive players you can possibly recruit and rep them over and over until the hands and feet do the right thing naturally. In any scheme, success starts with your guy winning his battle against their guy.

I am unsure exactly what he meant when he said overrated. It may have just been a poor choice of words and his point was that the OC's importance was secondary to everything they were trying to get done with recruiting at the time. Or, maybe he thinks there's a bunch of guys who could have success here. Doesn't really matter to me.

Well, Bama and Clemson are still playing. That would be interesting. The NFL just finished and today is the first non-holiday, so I would predict by the end of the week we hear something.

You also have to remember, it’s not as simple as you want to be the OC? You do?ok!

Have agents & contracts to iron out first. You may have a guy you want & just not be able to agree on some contract details.

Sark has only been fired for about 48 hours & that was during a holiday.

Have to suffer through the Volnation cryptonite ..... patience
