Smashed Finger - Medical Advice

I would only poke through the nail if the pain/pressure keeps you from functioning. I slammed mine in a car door a few years ago and it was so bad I couldn't sleep. Start a small hole with a straight pin and work it SLOWLY until you get it through the nail. I would do it outside if possible because its going to make a mess.

You can pierce the nail but leaving it alone will end in the same result. The blood will dry under the nail. In a month or two the nail will start to crumble & the new nail will push it out of the way. It will probably take 6 months or a little longer for it to look normal again. Even after the old nail is completely gone it will look funky for awhile.

^ This right here. Just put ice packs on it to reduce the swelling and take anti-inflammatories.

I smashed my thumb almost two months ago and it hurt for maybe a week and a half. Had the exact same symptoms as you. Never hurt enough for me to attempt the pin or drill tricks and I never even thought about the idea of pooping on it. Probably would've been a huge help. No pain now, but I'm having to "wait" on the blood that piled up beneath the finger to grow out with the nail. It's a sllllllloooooooooooowwwwwwwwwww process evidently. It honestly looks 200 times worse now than it did when it actually hurt. I'll try to take a picture to show it.

The old nail will more than likely start to fall apart exposing the dry blood as the new nail grows out. It is a slow process. My nail looks like it has 2 tiers on it & it's been about 6 months.

I don't care what it looks like (for the most part). Will be glad when it stops hurting everytime I bump it on something

gonna give it another day before I 1) put a hole in it or 2) poop on it

It hurt like no other for the first week or so, then slowly faded away and now nothing. It just seems like it starts to look worse every time I look at it.

Had the same thing happen to me in high school in the late 80's when I was helping one of my coaches move a desk after practice. Desk drawer came out and fell on my foot crushing my big toe. Went to the ER and they lit a paper clip with a torch to stick through the top of my toenail to release the pressure and drain the blood. The most painful thing I have ever felt in my life. I think having Kathy Bates put a block of wood between my knees and swinging a 10 lb sledge hammer would have felt better. Good luck man!

You don't have to do anything to the nail. Put some ice on it. You might slice your finger to get the blood from in under your skin.
