No you don't understand the analogy at all. Donors are the board of directors, fans are the shareholders. The board has a vote & so do the fans. The fan vote is attending the games. If the fans desert the team entirely you bet your sweet a** the donors & administration will jump straight in the air and do whatever is necessary to bring the consumer back. Don't kid yourself. Without a fan base (consumer or shareholder) the program won't exist. The donors (board) can't fund the entire deal on their own.
Back to what I originally said. I do believe CDD will succeed. However, don't doubt for one second that if the fan base bailed UT would be forced to react in a major way including opening the bank even for an initial loss.
my 20 years in knoxville taught me one thing, while loyal,
vol fans are not very smart. putting up with fulmer who consistently underachieved and cost us at least 2 other national championships was stupid. fans were satisfied with 9-3 or 10-2 seasons.vol football had the potential
to be a dynasty like the u.now vol fans will settle for
mediocrity.they will continue to fill neyland stadium while we are a horrible football team led by average coaches and a horrible ad. prepare for 10 years of sucking and we will never hire an elite coach unless you the fan base demands it. the way you demand it is by boycotting the games and emptying neyland stadium.until they fire hamilton and hire a saban like coach vol fans will not even sniff a bcs bowl game or sec championship.i for one will be amused watching 100000 FANS fill neyland to watch a 3-9 team.these next 2 years will be the worst in ut history.yeah i know i'm a negavol but ai prefer realistic to negavol
UT is a state institution, not a corporation. I seriously doubt the Board of Trustees is going to open the vault to hire a football coach. The athletic department sustains itself. When you look out at that lower level, the fans and donors are mostly the same people. Also don't discount the effects of the economy on attendance. There are empty seats at a lot more venues than Neyland Stadium. For the most part, however, if you win they will come. Those are called "fair-weather" fans.

PS one more thing. UT isn't a corp but don't get things mixed up. The fball program is self sustaining not state run. It is absolutely a business.

we go to the stadium because we are vol fans. To honor those (past and present) that chose UT over any other college. We may not be fans of individuals, or of a coaching staff, but we can surely all come together on a Saturday and support Vols even if they don't win a game.... Most of you are like me and remember walking into Neyland for the first time as a kid. I don't remember who we were playing or whether or not we won the game. what I do remember is the size of the stadium and the sound of 100,000 fans. I can only hope that the kids that go to Neyland for the first time this year have a similar experience.
