We need to slow down seriously as fans and look at where we are and where we came from.

We have 2 more games to enjoy this team and support them. I for one appreciate what the seniors of this team have done for this program. The brought us back from the brink and we are in position to get back to the top because of them.Following CPF's firing which I begrudgingly agree had to happen it just should have happened differently.

There should have been someone ready and waiting for the job before Fulmer was ever fired. Kiffin imo could have been a great hire if not for the ridiculousness that happened at USC. Or he could have flamed out like he did in Oakland and USC who knows. What we do know if the year he spent here set us back immensely and created an almost impossible situation for whoever came next. Was Dooley as bad as advertised or was he given a situation beyond anyone fixing?

There was a lot of rot in the culture of the team and it took a lot of time to weed it out (irony is a mother). A lot of kids have left the program because of that. Trust me kids are leaving for more than just playing time they are leaving because the culture now is less accepting of crybaby primadonnas even if they are stars. Lets not fool ourselves and thing nothing at all will be tolerated but at least Butch is holding guys to a certain standard.

Guys that shut up and just do their jobs everyday eventually get their chance. See Colton Jumper and John Kelly. But honestly this thread is not about that.

The seniors and Juniors of this team deserve gratitude from us the fans for sticking it out. The Cam Suttons and JRM's of the world who damn sure should have went pro last year and are suffering for it. To the 3rd and fourth string guys stepping up and doing their best.

But fans don't care, we see our twitter feed dropping hate and jump on the next big hashtag. Because that's how invested we are.. 150 characters or less must explain everything wrong in the world. What has happened this season and the seasons before is not that simple. It can't be blamed on any one person or group of people unless you wan't to throw some deities in the mix.

This team has suffered a massive amount of injuries and ill timed ones at that. To key positions. We can sit her and whine and moan and place blame but trust me no one on this team has time for that that is what you do AFTER the season. What butch says is actually true the only way to get through a season like this is trying ot go 1-0 every week and leaving the rest behind.

We had one truly bad game this season. The rest of the games came out pretty much how they were (or should have been) expected to. We always knew there would likely be 2 losses even fully healthy. None but the most demented of twitterologists would have predicted more. what happened to with Hurd happened there is not really much that the coaching staff could have done about that to keep him without losing the whole team.

I do wish they had just laid it down and let him go early on but that's hindsight being 20/20 anyone in his position would have rode it out just like he did and hope for the best. No one outside of Hurd (and whoever put that garbage in his head) expected him to decide he wanted to be a WR and just quit. Same with Williams..... he is a fLanker JJ is a flanker...neither of them is really suited as a slot guy or is gonna beat out Malone at split end. the smart move is to share the ball and rotate. The bad move is to give up because u were not given the top spot when another guy has more than earned it. No one has been more important to this offense than JJ other than Dobbs. Period. The kid does so much every game that does not show up on a stats sheet but changes the course of games.

We are seeing the resurgence of our program but people are so impatient they are missing it. we have improved every single year under Jones. Period no question. There has not been regression as a team. We just live in a world now where people expect you to go from 0 to hero instantly. We have a lottery ticket mentality. We play in the SEC and as long as Bama does not run out of steam it is gonna be a hard battle to do anything other than compete for the SEC championship. No matter how "bad" the east is bad for the SEC is something most conferences would drool over.

Florida and Georgia will be good teams no matter what their record shows. Every year because they are located in hotbeds of recruiting. Any coach in America would kill for the walkons that those schools and bama get each year. This is a painful; truth but it is truth. It is the reason schools like UCF and USF can pop up on the national scene and make noise from time ot time. It is why most of our best players come from 3 states. Florida, Georgia and ALabama. Don't just look at this roster... look at any UT roster in history and its there staring you in the face.

So yeah Florida won a game against LSU with a bunch of starters out.... but their backups are not our backups. They went 2 deep one game we have been going 3 and 4 deep all year. These are facts. When you go 2 deep you are getting a guy that has gotten quite a few reps in practice. We are getting guys that mostly play scout team and minimal snaps with the starters and asking them to step up. Week after week.

Guys calm down appreciate we are gonna be better next year and the next and the next. Support your team during the season and save your negativity for the offseason when everything can be taken in perspective and given context. Let it play out and enjoy the ride. Even if that ride is to the Citrus Bowl.

I agree, perspective. But Butch gets a HUGE break based on who he followed.
Not to many coaches go 5-7 in their first year and take ZERO blame for it.

Butch is trying to lower the bar. He lawds bowl appearances. That is not an accomplishment in the sense he is trying to spin it.

Amen! I for one appreciate the better games we've seen, yes I had to get some cardiology work done, but it was worth every cent of my deductible. The last thing we need is what we had with Dooley.

These coaches and players have worked their butts off this season, and they don't need Fans making them think what for?

Go Vols!

well said----we should not dump on Hurd too much, he played hard when he was all we had. I'm sure the team would love to be undefeated, and the coaches wish they could change a couple of calls, but that's life and I believe they gave their all for Tennessee:clapping:

In perspective it actually is. People act like you can just all of a sudden hire a good coach and all of a sudden win national championships. there are many coaches way better than Saban that will never win a Natty.

Winning a National Championship takes a lot of factors coaching being one but there are other things that go into it. Building a dynasty takes even more.Bama stepped into a vacuum. and that was it they have reached a critical mass to the point that Saban could retire right now this moment and it would still take the biggest idiot in the world a few years to rip mess up the formula.

For UT it is a realistic battle but uphill all the same. Demographics and history play against us. Homegrown talent plays a huge role in building something like that. Alabama has a lot more homegrown football talent than we do. So does Florida

He got us back bowling better bowl each year.. and then you get to the next level. People do not realize how important bowl games ANY bowl game is to a program. Both for development (extra practices) and recruiting.

Glad to see others think of it that way. This is this kids life and I am sure the decision he made was not taken lightly and with great pain as evidenced by his final statement. We can disagree with it all day but it is his life and no ours. I will remember him as one of the best backs ever to come through UT the same way I do Arian Foster. The same way I remember Da'Rick Rogers and Kelley Washington and Bryce Brown even.

Just like me at that age I made decisions that may not have been in my best interests just on a smaller stage and so did we all.

We weren't expecting THE NC this year. We WERE expecting the SEC East title. No matter how you want to spin it after the fact, this season did not live up to expectations. Period.

I am not blaming the team, who for the most part played their hearts out. Buck has to stop at the HC's desk. The team was not prepared to play come gameday.

I say give Jones another season. But we can't pretend that this season wasn't a disappointment. I like Butch Jones and wish him the best. But I don't think we met the mark this year, even before the injuries. From the opening fumble against Appy State, Team 120 just didn't look ready to play. This was the most talented team we have had in probably 15 years, but we were unable to start a game with any spark or passion. We struggled early against teams that we should have burrowed by 30 points. We had SEVEN turnovers against ATM. SEVEN.

I remember the talk prior to the season. "Tennessee picked to win the east, but they always choke". I was offended just like all other Vol fans. But you know what, THEY WERE RIGHT. We have to live with this junk for another offseason and there ISN'T A THING WE CAN SAY ABOUT IT.

We beat UF and UGA both this year.... Think about that. I am sorry if some folks can't get in touch with reality but no this team has not let me down. This season was not a disappointment. Do I wish we'd beat SC? Hell yeah but the truth if we lost 1 O N E game we shouldn't have this year. There was one game we didn't come out for. To say this team has come out unprepared is ridiculous and proof you know nothing about football.

This team came out and fought every snap till the last whistle all year. With that one game as an exception and we now know them coming out like that was all about the inner turmoil that lead to Hurd leaving. What were the coaches supposed to do say "F my offense kid you're right, even though you're a shield high draft pick already we will scrap our whole offense andine up the imaginary fullback in our back pocket in front of you" "oh we will let you play WR too, I'll just fire the whole offensive staff we don't need them you call the plays and line up where you want"

Had they done something that stupid we'd be like our last 2 opponents. We'd rush for 400 yards a game and still lose.

I'm not sure why your post is directed at me. 6-6 gets you a bowl game. Wow!

I never mentioned national championship. Start with winning the east. A step Butch needed.

My point is that Butch was extended a **** load of grace out of the gate simply because his predecessor was so bad. Its not as if anyone was on his ass. It's year 4 and he is circling to wagons and doubling down on cliche fest. It's a horrible strategy.

if you'd used this, you could have got the same point across.

You, OP, need to speed up and smell the coffee! He's lost this fanbase. Us NegaVols see right through him....hes weak and infantile. The guy knows 2 words....resiliency and complimentary...its stale and nobody wants to hear that cheese anymore. We deserve better. Yeah, I appreciate him for his passion and recruiting, but that's about it. He blew it and knows it. He's just delaying the inevitable. His days are outnumbered in Knoxville.

Yes we all must remember:

Butch Jones inherited a Complete Landfill Fire. No Coach in the history of football has ever inherited a worse situation. NEVER. In bringing his team from irrelevant to mediocrity, his team was the youngest team ever to compete. There are no other teams playing freshmen at key positions. He is the only coach ever to have to deal with injuries to several key players. Cut him some slack people.

Nice job OP, but you give the "miserables" too much credit. Volnation might represent 5% of the entire fan base, the negavols are about 5% of volnation, so you are preaching to a small annoying sliver of our fan base.

We have come a long way but the starting point was so bad we are still way off what we want.

So here is hoping that Butch can get us there.

Go Vols!
