Defensive coordinator John Chavis has always been complimentary of the job secondary coach Larry Slade has done for him. Chavis has long called Slade the best secondary coach in the country and Friday he indicated that Slade may have had his best year.

"I can't say enough about what Larry Slade has done with our secondary with a bunch of young folks," Chavis said. "What is amazing is that everyone can't see that. With the injuries we have had in the secondary and what he has had to do when other people can't get freshmen on the field, we played basically the last three quarters of the championship game with three freshman. I think that says it all."

IMO these Freshman played good despite Slade not because of Slade.

its never been rumored that he is going to be canned, the rumor that is out there is that he is retiring for healt reason and there is good reason to believe he will retire.

Rumor has it that Dale Carter is going to be named the new DB coach at Slade's retirment press conference.

There definitely would need to be a pat down before letting him onto the practice field.

ShoJ for DB coach!

I'm sorry, but when your secondary allows 245 yards per game, you could start 4 Mangino's back there, and I'd be pissed.

The thing is, even if Chavis believes this he a) is not in a position to give anybody a vote of confidence and b) he has to know that even if it is true that people aren't going to understand because of the results. It's one of those times when it's best to just not say anything.

Friedgen would make a good Safety. He could walk down to the line of scrimmage and have the QB laughing so hard that he wouldn't be able to get the play off. Dude is funny.

That may be the first time I've ever seen GAVol refer to someone as "dude".

As for our D, I'm convinced that someone on that defensive staff is leaving.

Since the "dude" is a leader of athletes you can't really argue with the assesment, can ya?

somebody needs to fire john chavis YESTERDAY.

oh.. it's nice he comes up with an excuse for THIS year.. but the thing is that THIS year has been pretty much like EVERY year when, overall, the secondary hasnt been able to stop ANYbody on a consistent basis.

dammit, why will chavis just not go away!?!?!?

BTW... GAVOL.. I agree with you. Best just to keep his stupid mouth shut. That he's not smart enough to figure THAT out is yet just another reason to fire his ass.

I've heard that Fulmer, Chavis, Adkins, Brooks, and Slade are all going to come down to the ring on Wednesday and call out Kippy Brown. Kippy's going to come out in a Detroit Lions shirt....when he gets in the ring, Fulmer's going to toss him a UT shirt....Kippy will act all torn, and look to the crowd for guidance...after a few moments of deliberation, Kippy will put the shirt on, and all the coaches will embrace and then turn to the crowd holding one another's arms in the air in victory.....

Then, just before leaving the ring, Fulmer will say, "Oh, I almost forgot...there's just one more thing...Larry....you're fired!"....out of nowhere, Kippy will hit Slade in the back with a chair, and the coaches will stomp on coach Slade.....

Then, Eric Berry and Brent Vinson will run out from the back and clear the ring, standing over Slade to protect him....this will set the stage for a huge matchup - Berry, Vinson, and Slade vs. Fulmer, Chavis, and Kippy @ Wrestlemania. If Fulmer's team wins, Slade has to retire. If Slade's team wins, he keeps his job and Berry gets to start at safety and quarterback next year. Should be a good match.

The fact that we had 3 freshman speaks volumes to the lack of talent. With D Morley coming back-I hope- and the baseball player -our secondary will improve. Slade is a classy guy and great role model for these student athletes.

I don't know if it matters next year who is coaching the db's next year. They look to be the rock of the defense no matter what. Vinson, Berry, Willingham, Rogan and Morely will be awesome next year. They have the potential to be one of the best in the country if we would stop letting the opposing receivers have a 15 yard cushion. :banghead2:

this is directly from the Phil Fulmer philosophy on coaching...just throw the guys with talent out there and let 'em go.

no way. he's more about throwing the guys with experience out there all day over playing the talent.
