We don't generally criticize referees here at the 'Bag (the fans make too big a deal over the zebras anyway), but the absurd technical foul whistled on Tennessee's Bruce Pearl late in the Vols' win over Xavier nearly ruined an electric game. Pearl was merely exhorting his player to defend when he got T'd up for being outside the coaching box. The crew working the game (James Breeding, Eugene Crawford, Joe Lindsay) should be embarrassed. If that's the way we're headed with the coaching "decorum" point of emphasis, count me out.

At least I don't feel as bad for complaining about the refs in that game now.

Any reasonably thinking person would have to agree it was a bad call, even if technically correct, he was over the line. That was also a bad call when walking was called on the player who dove on the loose ball. Making a call on a borderline situation that affects the outcome of a game needs to be avoided.

Heck, it was a terrible call, but if calls like that inspire our team that much, then I hope they call Bruce for 20 more T's before the years out

there are some coaches that could get technicals 20 times a game if the refs stuck to that rule.

When I talked to Larry Eustachy last night, he indicated he likes the new decorum rules about as much as castor oil. He focused on the fact that assitant coaches are supposed to stay on the bench. His point was that it's ridiculous to prevent the guys who are instrumental in recruiting the players from having meaningful interaction with the players during games.

The officials should spend their time working the game instead of the coach's box. The guy was all the way across the floor when he called it. I've heard the legendary official Ralph Stout say it a hundred times and it's true "the fewer times you blow the whistle and control the game the better referee you are." Those guys need to learn that especially on the college level.

i think everyone agrees that it was a bogus call. In the refs' defense, their boss was at the game, so it seems like possibly water under the bridge unless it becomes a huge problem for the team this year. You can't blame the refs for calling the game according to the rules, they were obviously being evaluated.

If their "evaluator" agrees with that call then we need new management. Being a high school basketball coach who deals with the lowest level of organized officials, I know how bad they can be. And that call was still near the top of the list of worst calls I have ever seen.

I agree with you here. High school officiating in both football and basketball is frequently a travesty. Some of these guys need to be strung up. I've seen plenty of bad calls in college, but those usually just seem to be errors. In high school you really can see officials that are intentionally screwing one team over.

I think personally refs in all major sports are trying to take over the games more and more. I don't know what the deal is, but it almost seems egotistical in a way.

As long as the coaches box rule is called consistently across the board on every coach (including K), then there is no problem. If the coaches know the rule and they break it there should be a penalty. Good coaches understand this.
