NCAA Football Oversight Committee voted to support a single transfer portal window that would take place in January.

According to a report from Ross Dellenger, the NCAA Football Oversight Committee voted on Thursday in support of a single transfer portal window. This would take place in early January that would last 10 days, eliminating the spring transfer portal window. Dellenger clarified that it is not a done deal, though, with the Administrative Committee still needing to formally adopt the change later.

This would eliminate the window that saw the Vols lose and gain talent this past cycle. Most notably, Iamaleava, the returning starting quarterback for Tennessee, exited in this period and found his way to UCLA. Safety Jakobe Thomas, who would’ve contended to start on the defense, also departed for Miami.

HOWEVER

There's got to be a way to figure out how to do it after all games have been played.

I'm almost to the point we start the season a week earlier and get all games played by January 1st.

exactly this. It won't change anything until CFB programs privative and create a hybrid model that is almost like the old NCAA mixed with the NFL. Until then the wild west that is college football will continue to be what it currently is.

I know it would be risky, but in big 2025 I would like to think we could either A) delay enrollment a couple weeks or B) The player can stay enrolled at the school they are transferring from for the semester but be eligible for spring practice. Most of these kids do online classes anyways.

90% of P4 transfers will have their deals in place before January 2nd. That day could have thousands of entries to the portal and commitments to other teams by the same players. The agents are going to be super active during October, November and December. Lot of deals made...

they have to be registered by drop / add dates which for some schools is mid-January. Plus, there is no way the schools start football any earlier than they do now.. JMO

10 days is crazy. But we know this legislation isn't designed to help the players. It doesn't necessarily help the coaches either. This appears designed to appease the myriad of fans who are whining about players actually having control over where they suit up and play. It seems oddly controlling/restrictive of player movement, for whatever reasons.

This does not prevent a player who wants to leave from leaving for another school at any time. They would just have to wait a year like they use to do.

To me this is more like - if you want to play for another school in the coming year, you must declare and move in a specific period or wait.

10 days is fine. Most of the players know well before that and have their folks already talking to other teams.

This is sorely needed to keep all this from destroying the college football industry. The Nico situation was bad - very bad - he transferred late and in effect pushed another transfer to another team.

This will allow teams to solidify their roster. It also benefits the players as they can focus on getting ready for the coming year and on their education without the possibility that another player comes in and forces them to go looking for another school.

That's pretty dumb. All of us deal with rules at our jobs that restrict us in various ways. Players are a little different in that their play and pay fall under a contract for services. Contracts have deliverables and include terms of obligation. You can quit a job. You cannot just walk away from a contract because someone else offers a better one.

This rule ultimately helps everyone by leveling the playing field and competition. And yeah, players don't have to wonder about their team mates. Coaches don't have to stress year round about who might decide to demand more money or bolt.

I think it should be more than 10 days but it isn't some violation of player "rights". Playing football for a particular organization for money is not a "right". It is a privilege negotiated by the participants.

No one is "controlling" where they suit up. They're preventing the players from perpetually holding that over the heads of their team, coaches, and team mates.

I’d say 15 days, tops…and only after every game has been played. Just my selfish preference to get it wrapped up and move on.
