Simms Should NOT Have Been Pulled

You have no clue in regards to this because you have no idea what the staff is allowing or calling.

Neither have many reads to go through and has been that way all year due to inexperience in the OL. \

Bary has much more potential than Simms. No doubt there. but the play calls are being dictated by what the OL can do, not the QBs

You are the one without a clue. Unless there is only one WR on the field there is more then one read to go through.
Why is everyone else running a pass pattern then? For the exercise?

I disagree - I think it's the opposite. On Bray's long TD pass he read the field perfectly and didn't throw to his first guy. Same on several other big plays. Simms was the one locking on to Gerald Jones (and then DMoore after Gjones when down) at the beginning of the season.

That was a special play he made there. He looked awesome.

I just watch his head and how quickly he makes the throw. For example that int he threw he never looked off the man.

I noticed Bray taking deeper drops than Simms with the same OL. That, to me, indicates that the staff thinks Bray either more capable of making reads while dropping or making the deep throws with accuracy.

Or both. No doubt Simms has arm strength.

If you pull up my comment history I've actually trended pro-Simms. But one thing I thought, and said, is that Bray will (and really should) take the job either mid-way or after the USCe game. Simms was meant to be a "bullet sponge" and Bray? Well, his upside isn't even in the same building with Simms.

it looked like he and DD had a heated discussion on the sideline that may be the reason he was pulled on top of the two fumbles.

he did and it looked like DD was telling him to get rid of the ball quicker. Simms appeared to say "I understand coach" but then went out and did it again. That's when he got pulled

at least that's what my lip-reading skills told me :)

That is what I saw as well, and he said it more then once. He kept telling coach "I understand" over and over. The problem is he did not understand, and I don't think coach believed him when he said it the first time.

10/13 153 yards, TD 0 ints.

The first fumble was not his fault at all. The second was partially his fault for not controlling the ball while moving through traffic. Both were the result terrible blind side protection.

He would never have thrown that pick six. Many high school QBs would have been able to read the defense on that route.

All that said... Bray recovered well and played pretty good the rest of the way, however saying Simms takes too many sacks is like the pot calling the kettle black if you think Bray doesn't do the exact same thing. We don't have the line to protect for all the pass plays the moronic Jim Chaney calls throughout the course of a game.

I'm not saying Bray shouldn't play the rest of the season, all I'm saying is Simms was having a pretty gritty and good game, probably his best as a Vol, when he got benched.

Simms has not progressed in several games. His talent and performance peaked long ago. Our offense under him was moving in quick sand.

Simms just holds onto the ball too long to get the ball off before getting sacked. When you get sacked, you have to hold onto the ball.

It was the right move that should have been made right after the Bama game.

Now he throws his team mates under the bus. He should get used to the pine now.

Yea our line sucks right now but he holds the ball way too long. And he still didn't hold onto the ball

I'm sure he never would have thrown that one against Oregon and Florida or that endzone pick against Alabama.

2 fumbles and no ball security will get you pulled every time!! If you tell the coach I understand then go back out and do the same thing its obvious you dont understand!!!

He was pulled specifically because he ignored CDD's instructions to get rid of the ball. Watch the replay after the first fumble. I love his attitude and leadership but when your players don't follow your instructions you have no choice but to make a change.

He has repeatedly been instructed to get rid of the ball. As much as I like certain qualities about him he just won't follow instruction.

The change was appropriate and warranted.

If you disagree you have probably never been a coach.

I agree with you for the most part, but if you look at his postgame comments, I couldn't be more disappointed with his attitude and leadership.

I wonder if Thomas was told to get his butt kicked 2 plays in a row so that they could see if Simms really understood?:)

I think in the game of baseball it is three strikes and you are out. Simms fumbled twice the same way, holding the ball to long. He was challenged after the first one and did not change. I think what Dooley was right. If I did that in my job, I would be on the street now looking for a new job. Bray gave life to the team.

IMHO the season is over. Bray is clearly the better quarterback. This is the perfect scenario to get him ready for next year. Im excited about our talent at the skill positions. I like what Dooley is doing w/ them right now. UT may not be fixed by next year but I can about guarantee we have a winning season. I like Simms because of his toughness but sometimes he's like a deer in the headlights. Both fumbles were absolutely his fault. The moral of the story is PLAY BRAY BENCH SIMMS.

Maybe he didn't deserve to be yanked at that time...BUT AREN'T YOU GLAD HE WAS???!!! Bray may have thrown a pick-six, but then he marched us down the field a couple of times in a fashion that Simms just couldn't/wouldn't have done. We did lose, but at least we have a little spark of hope for our offense for the rest of the season.

Many ways to motivate players....pulling them when they repeatedly make same mistake is one of the best. CDD did the right thing by pulling Simms.

Dooley disagrees with you. He said himself Simms held the ball to long on those plays.

No. When he was benched we are down 17-10 and are getting the ball right back. I think the correct decision would have been to give him one more series to try and move the ball down for a score. He had played well enough to that point to have one more shot...

You guys are looking at it retrospectively as if you already know that bray was going to look good out there chucking it around once the outcome was no longer in doubt. Up until yesterday it is Bray who had looked like a lost puppy in there, which is exactly what he looked like on the pick six. Granted the predictable play call from Chaney did him no favors but you still have to read a zone blitz.

Simms gave us the best chance to WIN yesterday, down a touchdown and he was hitting his throws.

After Brays pick six we weren't going to win...yea yea we tied up, but be realistic, we weren't going to win.

If Simms stays in the game at 17-10 we may not be as excited about Bray..but we may have won a damn football game..I would always err on the side of giving my team the best chance to win.

Moral of the story..when you consider whether Simms should have been pulled when he was pulled, think about how awful Bray had been all season and how Simms was having his best day as a Vol and we were only down a touchdown early in the third and then answer the question... Its easy to say put Bray in for those of you dismissing his pick six and just looking at the chuck and duck mode throws he made..But also consider that Simms put up just as good of numbers against a fresh south carolina defense when the score was still close and they weren't just sitting back in zone coverage.

I would like to ask a Question about all of this. How do you make players better on the field and off the field?
You create competition.
If there is no competition is does not drive a player or a team to get better, they do not drive to correct their downfalls. I have no problem with the QB change. Dooley has worked with Simms, talked to him about his delivery, his presence on the field, his reads, and not much has changed. So sometimes in order to get a players attention you have to make a change. Let him know he is not bigger than the team.
Hopefully in the real world that will make a player, such as Simms and Bray step up and work harder. So in next game if they are not getting it done on the field they can be pulled. Now is not time to worry about hurt feeling, Now is the time to step up for the better of the program, work, study and become the elite of the SEC.
GBO!!!!
Again we have a lot of arm chair "posters" on this board who have never coached, played or really been around the game, besides a Sat or Sunday afternoon watching on TV listening to DouchStriet, and think they have it all figured out.

If Simms would tuck it and run or throw it out of bounds, I would have no problem leaving him in there. He has not learned to use his internal clock (or it's broken/missing) and his time is up. Let the freshman do his thing.

How many "one more time"'s does a guy get? How many freaking times have I sat and yelled at him to dump the ball, run, or throw it out of bounds this season? Every game is the same story. Hold the ball, hold the ball, hold the ball, GET KNOCKED THE FREAK OUT. If a person doesn't learn from the repeated consequences of an action over a series of months now, do you really think he'll get it by giving him "one more time"? He's out of one more times in my book.

I wanted the kid to be good. It's the best for the Vols for Simms to be the guy, then we get another good qb or two to have a competition with Bray when Simms is gone. If Bray starts, some guys may look at that and think they'll ride the pine for a few years and go elsewhere. BUT, we're not going to win anything with Simms laying on his back with or without the ball.

I wouldn't be upset if Simms doesn't play another down all year with the exception of mop up duty.

He doesn't have one. At least that's what I've seen.

The ball should be out of his hands after the dropback. It isn't. It never is.

Bray will be an elite QB, IMO.
