Simms is good

Based on this performance, he's good. He's not a game manager, he's good. He's not great, he's good. Got it? His release is slow. His footwork is sloppy. But you can win with him. He's accurate. Stocker dropped 3 of his passes. He got a lot of time. He's good. He's better than Crompton. He's tougher. Most importantly, he's a better leader. You all will see. Drunk out.

Simms footwork has improved 100% since spring drills.
He reads D well and is making better decisions. Stocker will have a big game against Oregon. The sun is rising in Big Orange country.

Cheney will Cromptonize the offense and put Simms in situations where he can be successful, not asking him to do too much.

I think the opposite is true. The O was so vanilla it was difficult for anybody to look more than average. I can't wait to see the wrinkles next Saturday Cheney comes up with.

In no way to I feel like Simms will be a star! However, I think he will do an above average job of getting the ball in the hands of players that have the ability to make things happen on the field.

Bray will be good in time, but for now Simms is our guy.

GBO!!!!! :dance2:

Simms is not NFL material from his first game at UT. I can't see him being any better than Crompton (now looking for work). Yes, Bray was a little shook up when he entered the game (mouthpiece on helmet for first two plays) and still has much more polish than Simms. Time and experience will have Bray in the game as starter before long.

Way too early to make a judgment like that.
Would you have started Stephens in front of Crompton last year?
Simms will be your starter for the next 2 years. Get with the program and support him.
Let's weed out the negative fans.

Simms has accuracy issues when he is feeling pressure, like most QB's. If he works on his footwork he will be a more accurate passer.

I think Simms can be a realible QB for the Vols down the road, given he has the time to throw. We should know by midseason. If he resolves some of his accuracy issues he may be our starter for the rest of the season, and possibly all of next.

Go Vols

We will see Simms for exactly what he is next week. Oregon will give us a good idea of where he is at (along with the rest of the team).

Exactly. When Simms is pressured how he reacts is critical. He will be pressured Saturday. I always believed that Crompton should have recognized his primary targets were covered sooner and tucked the ball and ran more often. He had some speed wasn't afraid of taking a hit. During the 2006 and 2007 seasons Ainge was trained to throw the ball away and avoid sacks or try to force an ill advised pass and we were good enough to win the east and easily could have beat LSU in the Dome except Ainge also had a nasty habit of telegraphing passes and was jumped on 6 yard stick route that cost us the game. GO VOLS!!!!!!

there are not many wrinkles... you can only run what the kids are capable of executing.... Losing Jones reduces number of plays available significantly.. if Moore also out, passing game becomes Stocker and that is about all. The kids only know so mnay plays they can execute successfully.. it takes time to learn each other and to execute what the coaches want. Can't do it in a spring and summer..

Playbook is rather anemic at this point

Well, i'd take my chances running some of those freshman receivers down the field and throwing it up to them. If Jones was all we had as a possesion receiver, we were screwed anyway. He's never stayed healthy through a whole season and the trend continues. They need to work on timing this week with some of the new guys. Balance will be key this week and Oregon's 8, 9 in the box will be tougher to run against than the cannon fodder we ran through this week.

LAst year against Western KY I found myself asking "Good Grief, why did he throw that?", in reference to some of Cromptons throws. At least Simms didn't give us any of those jewels to ponder.

Crompton gave many a fan heart attacks. Simms hopefully has a better game day head on his shoulders

Good point. Hopefully, we have six plays a la Lombardi that Oregon just can't stop!

A lot of you guys are acting like Simms was terrible. He managed a good game and didn't force his throws or commit a turnover. Plus he did make some good throws, but when he did it still wasn't good enough for some of you. Peyton made good throws for 4 years against UF, but it never got him a win. It was Simms first game and he did everything the staff asked of him. No one has said anything good about his check downs or decisions not to force the ball. All I read is he got GJ's hand broke and we still don't know the extent of the injury.

I referenced a good "no throw" he made. Ironically enough, they roughed the punter the next play on 4th+3, which led to a 1st down TN. Last year, the 1st option wouldve been thrown to and we'd have turned the ball over. (DMo in double coverage, but past the marker)
