At this point last year we had no signs of a passing game with Crompton. If Simms can progress at the rate Crompton did last year we could be in for a pleasant surprise. Also this team looks more competitive than last year's bunch.

I think mentally and as far as managing the game, Simms is definitely better than Crompton was at this point. The coaches need to do the same with Simms as they did with Crompton. They need to roll him out more. The one time they did roll him out he hit Moore on a 49 yard TD strike.

Simms needs to just read the field. He can do it but he makes up his mind before the play develops on most of his bad throws.

and death by firing squad is much better than death by hanging.

We'll see. If he continues to progress and get more in tune with his all his weapons & playbook he should have a good season.

He is head & shoulders above where Cromp Daddy was 3 games in last year.

3rd & Chavis hurt us more than Simms did yesterday.

Simms has looked better than Crompton did at this point in the season. The only thing is that Crompton had a lot more talent than Simms, and a lot higher ceiling. I don't think Simms will be as good as Crompton was after he started to turn it around, but I think he can be decent.

He's not. It's that simple.

Jonathan Crompton's first three games (1-2)
Western Kentucky: 21-28, 233, 5-2
UCLA: 13-26, 93, 0-3
Florida: 11-19, 93, 0-2
Total: 45-73, 419, 5-5

vs

Matt Simms' first three games (1-2)
UT-Martin: 14-24, 181, 1-0
Oregon: 15-29, 151, 0-1
Florida: 19-31, 259, 2-2
Total: 48-84, 591, 3-3

Outside of the first game, Matt has done a better job of Crompton. He has played two top ten teams back to back and was only playing his third true game of D-1 football after coming in from JUCO.

I gave Simms some crap yesterday after that intentional grounding, but he's doing the best he can with what he has in front of him, which is a completely inexperienced line. He may have had 5 times yesterday in which he had to throw. So, at this point, his progression is mutually linked with the progression of the O-line, or lack there of.

Crompton was sacked 18 times last season.
Simms has already been sacked 9 times.
Hard to excel when you're laying on your back or running for your life.
As supporting cast improves, so will Simms.
And GJ was a major part of Crompton offense last year.

Crompton threw a better ball overall...better touch especially.

Simms does seem to have leadership stamina. After making some throwing errors, he didn't pout and turn inside out. Even though he took too many sacks in the game, he threw the ball away rather than throwing a pick 6 like in the UO game. (His two picks against UF were not because of a heavy rush on the play.) He needs to move through his read-progressions faster. He needs to read the field at snap and not just upon drop.

Simms got lucky....should have been as easy 4 pick night.
