Amazing that he assumed he wouldnt be known. Shows humility.Great story. I thought his health was ok for his age. Hate to hear he is declining. Grew up with him as . Got to meet him iin 85 and 91. I would suggest he one of top 3 most influential people in UT football history.

Saw him coming out of a restaurant with his wife and another couple on Bourbon Street the night before the 1990 Sugar Bowl vs Virginia....he was drunker than 3 mops and at least 1 bicycle.
I have been to 2 Sugar Bowls, and I haven't been able to go down to Bourbon Street without getting drunk either. Coincidence???

". . . he still should have won the Heisman in 56 the golden boy from Norte Dame with a 2 and 8 record won it, think about it this day and time if they gave it to a guy from a school with a 2 and 8 record."

A friend of mine went to an event where Coach Majors was speaking, followed by a question and answer session. Someone asked Majors if he thought he should have won the Heisman instead of Hornung.

"No," said Coach Majors. "Jim Brown should have won the Heisman."

Were you coaching a team in the Sugar Bowl the next day either time? 😊

Don't understand why the title of the thread has "silly" in it. Coach Majors is an older man now and is not expected to have the sharpness of a 30 year old. He has had people coming up and talking to him out of the blue for nearly 60 years. His love of Tennessee keeps him from completely running out of patience.

Your correct on Coach Majors not seeming to be all there. I work maintenance for Tanger in Sevierville and last week he came there and stopped me while I was on my Kubota. Was looking for a high end shoe store but couldn't remember the name of the store. He said he had in written down on a piece of paper and the guy had more notes then I have ever seen in my life! I took him around to a few stores until I think we had the right one. He seemed really confused. Hell of a nice guy. Asked me where I was from and told him originally Syracuse and that when I first moved here I wasn't a Vol fan and that '98 game was bull because of pass interference call and equipment violation. He agreed. (Think he still dislike's Fulmer.) lol. One more thing I don't really think he needs to be driving any longer. Honestly don't know how he made all the way to Sevierville...

I was there the first time he ran on the field as coach and there the last time he ran on the field as coach, he still should have won the Heisman in 56 the golden boy from Norte Dame with a 2 and 8 record won it, think about it this day and time if they gave it to a guy from a school with a 2 and 8 record.:salute::Coach liked a shot every now and then.:toast:
You think Johnny should of won it over Jim Brown?? Lmao everyone forgets about Jim.

I went to same Huntland High, same as Coach Majors. The one time I met him in 81? at an O&W game, he was nice to me and said we (Huntland) need to get better and we went 10-1. He looked 60 back then, how old is he now?

FWIW, CPF went to Franklin County just up the road about 15 miles.

He snapped and yelled curse words at me on the side of the street prior to the O&W game when I met him and the wife walking towards us and said to him how much of a fan of his I was and appreciate all he had done for UT and asked if I could have my picture taken with him. His wife scolded him a little bit and he then yelled and cursed at her, so yea, theres my Coach Majors story. Your story is much better.

wow you are some more piece of work, i am thinking just how you may turn at his age , now that would be something to see and hear

I was at a restaurant in El Paso and Johnny was at another table with some assistants having a business conversation the night before the Sun Bowl. Several fans would walk up to the table and interrupt them and Johnny was a lot more patient than I would have been.

I never for the life of me understand why public figures are expected to stop what they are doing and sign autographs and have pictures taken with fans. I see it as an invasion of their privacy, but that's just me.
