Silent Hills bought out by Microsoft (rumor)

Strange rumor considering Konami made a statement today saying they were still committed to console games and I thought they specifically mentioned new SH games.

“the Metal Gear and Silent Hill series, both beloved by countless fans around the globe, are also extremely important to Konami. We have nurtured them with care over many years since their inception, and will continue to produce products for both franchises, but we are not currently at a stage where we can announce the path these future titles will take.”

They may still make Silent products and sell this particular one as an exclusive to Microsoft since it allegedly "80% complete".

I feel like this apology is an attempt to save face because they also say they that Japan is their primary target because of mobile gaming.

I am waiting to see if they put anything out at E3. Outside of Kojima's stuff, Konami has been awful with maintaining their premier titles. But that seems to be the case with SquareEnix and Capcom too.

The part that makes it sound like a ridiculous rumor is that they are paying BILLIONS for Silent Hills. Disney paid over 4 billion for Star Wars, to put that into perspective.

Maybe one billion for the entire Konami library of console titles. Maybe. But Microsoft did pay over a billion for Minecraft recently...

I could see MS going after the franchise but BILLIONS? There's no way in hell that franchise is worth that kind of money. Are they sure they mean dollars and not Yen? Besides didn't MS just purchase Mojang (makers of Minecraft) for like 2 billion? I'd have a very hard time believing that MS would make a similar acquisition in such a short period of time.

I swear MS is like the New York Yankees of video gaming. Never mind developing anything internally and ADDING to the industry. Let's just throw money at whatever we want, out spend the competition, and ensure IP's that were once multi platform only come to our console.

The article only said billions. Never said dollars or yen. But that would make more sense!

I thought Microsoft just published games for studios through their "Microsoft Studios" branch more so than develops games? I know they were publishing BioWare games on Xbox and 360 before EA snatched them up. Bungie, of course, for a long time. I think Microsoft Studios publishes the Forza franchise too. Same with Fable, Gears of War, and Alan Wake. I also think they were behind the companies that made State of Decay, Ori and the Blind Forest, and the recent Killer Instinct. But yeah, they did pay a buttload for Minecraft, but that game will probably make them a ridiculous amount of money going forward lol

I wish there weren't exclusive titles, but as long as Microsoft and Sony have their own publishing studios, we just have to suck it up and buy multiple consoles haha I wish I knew how much Sony shelled out for exclusive rights to Bloodborne...

I LOVE exclusive titles, provided they're titles that are developed internally. It's what defines each console and usually the exclusives are the games that look and run the best because they are coded closest to "the metal" and take the greatest advantage of what each console can do.

What I don't like is when companies pay for exclusivity on titles that otherwise would have been available on all platforms. To me that's a parasitic approach that doesn't ADD anything to the industry, but rather takes away from a certain group.

As for Blooborne, I don't know if Sony paid for exclusivity or not. I never did hear. If they did then shame on them! Just like shame on MS for purchasing Tomb Raider exclusivity.

I hear ya. I can understand 1st party developers making exclusives, considering they're making it for their machines. It would be odd to see Zelda on PS4 or Halo on Nintendo.

I think From Software said "Bloodborne was only possible on the PS4" or something to that effect. Many think that was money talking, considering a monster PC could run it perfectly and I doubt the One would have chugged, Bloodborne wasn't THAT graphically intense.

So you don't like any Corporation in the U.S? There are many companies who build their own things but also buy out the competition. Its just the nature of big business in general.

I don't give a toss about other corporations because I'm not as passionate about, say the kitchen appliance industry as the video game industry.

Look I get it kwebb. I get the realities of business that companies are going to do whatever is in their power to gain an advantage. However that doesn't mean I have to like it. What frustrates me with MS is the same thing that's always frustrated me about them. They've been in the video game business now for 13 years and still, Halo is the ONLY mainstream identifiable franchise they have created, Forza to a lesser extent. I just would rather see them invest their money in trying to develop more in-house franchises that they can call their own than taking the "easy route" by trying to buy up the competition. Like I said, I feel that's a parasitic approach that's not adding anything to the industry. It's a preventative tactic by taking games out of the hands of a certain percentage of gamers that otherwise could have played them. Phil Spencer came right out and said they bought Tomb Raider exclusivity because they didn't have anything to compete with Uncharted. Well, then go out there and CREATE a franchise to compete with it! Don't buy up exclusivity to a franchise that's loved by millions in order to prevent a certain percentage of those gamers from getting to play it.

I agree. I'll also add that since Kojima is no longer employed by Konami, future Metal Gear games will probably follow suit with the rest of their library.

To be fair, Sony bought up Uncharted's Naughty Dog back in the Crash Bandicoot days. Like you said, they've been in the video game business a little longer and have managed to secure some great exclusive titles from developers, but I don't see that they have a ton that just sets them head and shoulders above Microsoft. It would really come down to a matter of taste. Some people are Halo, Gears, or Forza to the bone. Some people are Killzone, Uncharted, and God of War. Some are Mario, Zelda, Pokemon. I don't know, I've seen all three major companies secure exclusive titles by buying up third party developers or paying a ton for exclusive rights from others.

MS has a long history of plundering software and hocking it as their own...

Haha operating systems aside, they do no different than Sony or Nintendo when it comes to buying up developers or exclusive rights.

**I own all three's major systems, and have for 30 years, so I consider myself pretty neutral in the console war lol

I own all 3 as well. But not everyone is so fortunate. I'm speaking more on their behalf than I am my own.

I actually don't mind it when companies buy whole development studios. That shows they're making a long term investment in that company and will financially support them to create new games. There's more of a risk involved that the company is willing to take and I can respect that a lot more than simply money-hatting a single title in order to keep it out of the hands of a certain percentage of gamers that otherwise would have gotten to play it.

That does suck. Sony's exclusive content for Destiny or Xbox's Tomb Raider. I think both are time based exclusives though, so both will eventually have access, but waiting a year or more sucks because the games will be yesterday's news by then.
