As I understand the rule, we can have 85 players on scholarship and sign 25 per year. However, the 25 can be increased if we signed fewer than 25 the previous year, and the signees over 25 are EEs.

We signed only 21 in 2013.
Right now, we have 17 verbals, and 10 are EEs.

Given we lost 3 Jrs and a few seniors, am I correct that we could sign many more than 25 in the 2014 class (if we need to)?

Not many more, but yes. I have heard anything from 29 to 31. Not sure of the exact number.

We've had numerous threads and discussions on this.

The best answer is: nobody knows for CERTAIN. However, the number is 28-31 somewhere, depending on intricacies in backcounting, early enrollees, etc etc.

I believe the number is 29 or 30, but that's just an educated guess.

Wise for asking experts to confirm understanding.

Not wise for posting question where smarta&& dopes like yourself can respond.
I don't mind you asking, but I guarantee you nobody on here is an "expert". The real number is 29-30 (I'm 90% sure 29), but I bet we sign between 23-27

These are seniors that we will lose:

Palardy, Moore, Drummer, Brewer, Neal, Juin, Oliver, Crump, Sapp, Couch, Fugate, Propst, King, Carr, Smith, Walls, James, Fulton, Bullard, Ayers, Hood, & McCullers.

These are juniors who are likely to go to the NFL:

Johnson, Maggitt, Tiny

Also, add about 5 more players who leave to program voluntarily or get kicked off the team during the season.

Now your total would be (30) players.

The 22 players that graduate are guaranteed to go.

The 3 players who may go to the NFL early are probably 75% gone.

The 5 players who voluntarily leave or get kicked off of the team are about 100% guaranteed.

Guys, it's this simple:

We can take the 25 allotted in 2014. Period.

Then, in 2012, we signed 24 players, but 5 EEs will be backcounted to 2011. This was before the new rule. That means the new 2012 number was 19. Keep that in mind.

In 2013, we signed 23 players (including Vickers and Johnson later on). We backcount 5 EEs to make the number in 2012 back up to 24 and in 2013 it's 18.

Now, in 2014, we will sign 30 total, backcount 5 of the EEs to 2013 which will leave 25 for the 2014 class, but 30 total commitments.

Make sense?

Also, it could end up being 32 if we can backcount more than 5 2014 EE commitments. I believe our max class could be 32.

Thanks. Excellent data.
The reason I ask now is that there appear to be a number of discussions here about how many players to take at certain positions. For example, what do we do if all 3, Malone, Booth and Lauderdale want to player here. My sense is Butch would (and should) take all 3 if he could, and he has the room to do so given all the EEs we have.

I would say there is a very good chance Johnson and Maggitt are at UT as seniors.

Agree with you. I think you agree with the statement that them staying or going matters little to how many we sign. We'll sign 30 or more.

Can we not in theory sign even more than 30, as long as we are down to 85 by the specified time? Is this not what bama does?

All seems correct... however UT still has to stay under the 85 scholarship limit. To sign 30 they have to have 55 on scholarship after the season. Butch will need to do some trimming.
