And its possible Thigpen didn't want the job. Not everybody is cut out for it, as great a recruiter as he is.

Good to see that Butch is grooming these guys for the future. DeBord should be a good mentor and teacher.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The University of Tennessee announced wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni and running backs coach Robert Gillespie have received promotions, with Azzanni named passing game coordinator and Gillespie assuming recruiting coordinator duties for the Vols.

"Zach has been instrumental in our continued growth, development, and success as an offense, particularly in the passing game," said head football coach Butch Jones. "He is consistently on the cutting edge of offensive football, and I look forward to his continued contributions to our offense here at Tennessee.

"Robert continues to demonstrate the interpersonal and organizational skills required to lead a coaching staff in attracting the highest caliber student-athlete to Tennessee. He has made tremendous contributions with his efforts in coaching our running backs and with the entire recruiting process. We know he will continue to play a significant role in our recruiting success.

"I know both will continue to make strong contributions moving forward toward our progress in returning Tennessee Football to its rightful place among the nation's elite, and I'm excited at what we can accomplish collectively as a coaching staff moving forward."

Azzanni and Gillespie are both entering their third season on the Tennessee coaching staff.

This is good news as OSU's rub coach left for nfl. Thought urbie cryer may come fishing for coach g

I agree. Thig will get his money and does not need the title. He is the closer.

Watch for elder to possibly be cmu's next coach and debord coach TE's allowing us to snag a qb coach

I could be crazy, but maybe, just maybe, Azzani and Gillespie were given promotions because they are bright young coaches who are IMO the most likely to be offered positions elsewhere. You can argue that point, but I believe they are the youngest coaches on staff. There are other coaches who will be hot commodities if we continue to win and improve, but I see guys like Thig and Strip being less likely to leave. I only see them leaving for coordinator positions at big schools.

Plus, he is "retiring" to a place with better weather and no state income tax. Win win for the guy.

Exactly. I have enough faith in Butch if he thought DeBord would come in and blow things up he wouldn't of hired him. There is a method to coaches madness.

Bingo, boys. Coach Z was the choice all the way he just needs some grooming. DeBoard is a 2 -3 year hire to let Coach Z get his feet wet. Coach Jones learned from DeBoard and what better guy to let Coach Z learn from. Quit acting like 16 year old girls and sit back and enjoy this show we have infornt of us. Makes me wanna slap somone all the *****ing around here!

Thig could have very well not been interested in the RC title. It comes with more money, but a lot administrative stuff he may not want to deal with.

I'm not trying to be stupid, but what does the passing game coordinator do? Does he call all the passing plays? Same question for the running game coordinator. Again, I am not trying to be stupid, I just honestly don't know.

I've said this several times for a week or more but I'll lay it out again.

This was NOT just about getting a OC, there's much more to it than that.

buTch had to put a solid plan together and then sell it to AD Hart and maybe even get AD Hart or a few big $$ boosters to kick n some more money to make everything work.

IF he got more money it may have depended on getting a top 5 or so recruiting class to so things had to wait until after NSD.

buTch does NOT just teach kids, he also teaches and trains coaches and he knows exactly what the goals of each coach are and where they want to go in their future.

1...Some coaches don't want the extra work and time commitment of being a O, D or recruiting coordinator so they're happy doing their work and getting Wins, pay raises and a bonus based on which Bowl game they go to.

2...He MUST find ways to keep the best recruiters well paid and happy to keep top recruiting classes coming in.

3...He must show coaches that he has a plan to keep the best recruiters/coaches moving up according to their stated goals.

4...Keeping coach Z by making him our future OC in training and learning from DeBord was a brilliant move and should keep him here another 5 to 7 years or longer...hopefully.

5...Gillespie obviously is a well organised guy and a guy buTch wanted to keep for several more years and does want the extra work and responsibilities so he's kept here by being the new Recruiting Coordinator with a good pay raise and it's possible that when coach Z becomes our next OC that coach G becomes the assistant OC and is in training to become the OC whenever coach Z gets a Head Coaching offer that he can't refuse.

buTch got all our coaches a pay raise after the bowl game and I'm sure that coach Thig was happy with that.

Maybe Thig doesn't want more to do just now and maybe he'll become a Coordinator in training with another pay raise after next season.

Relax and know that buTch has a plan for every situation because he's always talking to every coach, knows what they want and is detail oriented and will always try his best to keep good coaches and players in training because WIN at every level is what he's all about.

FYI...Don't be surprised if buTch, AD Hart and Coach DeBord already have a plan in place that whenever coach Z is ready and becomes our next OC that DeBord takes a administrative spot under AD Hart to retire in the AD.

I would make that man associate head coach! As for the other promotions if you don't feel good about the OC hire (which at worst is a wait and see deal imo) then you should as least realize these promotions were a great move.
