SI post-spring college football rankings

It took 5 years, but somebody finally got the memo to not put Florida in their preseason top 10 anymore. :D

J/K LG . . . I think they have you guys ranked about right.

I do see however that they did adhere to the 27th amendment to the Constitution which says that Michigan must be ranked in every preseason top 10.

LOL. I will give them credit for noting that Florida's offensive line is a question mark. And love the comment about the constitutional amendment that Michigan must be ranked. I think people rank them every year just because it is fun to say it out loud: "Michigan." "Meeeecheeegan." Just feels good to say it, doesn't it?

I only saw a Top 25. Oh well. Most of the poll is definitely based on last year's results which is fine. I still think a lot of the sportswriters will push us up in the preseason AP poll, if for no other reason than to try and create some hype for Cal in the opener.

He was counting the five they had as "On the cusp."

I like the idea of being off the radar. Its been a while since the Vols have not been under the national microscope.

In the whole scheme of things, are pre-season polls really anymore than a popularity contest.Point.Where were the Florida Gators ranked in basketball prior to this season, 41 st in the AP . :dunno:

No doubt about it. It is always a lot more fun and romantic (in the nonsexual sense) to be unranked and work your way up as the guys no one thought had a chance. Could UT be the equivalent of Hickory High of Hoosiers fame this year?

If we start the season under the radar, we'll immediately land back on it if we beat Cal in the opener.

I think that is probably true, particularly if you win by a solid margin.

SI don't have a decent sports analyst staff anywhooo. This is why they got out of broadcasting their own sports channel. They couldn't hang. I didn't expect to be contending in the first pre-pre-pre season polls but gotta tell you, SI is way off. It doesn't bug me though. Like others here, I would rather start low. Not that low but in the high teens somewhere. Any lower then that and no matter how much we win we would be in same boat as Auburn couple years ago.

I don't think margin of victory even has anything to do with it. If Cal comes in as a top 15 team and we win, I think we immediately start popping up on top 25 ballots.

For the record, Stewart Mandell is no fan of Fulmer or UT. I think 2 years ago he picked UT to lose to FL, Auburn, Ga, and Ole Miss all in a row. Last year, Fulmer proved him right.

UT will probably lose to the 4 teams he has rated:

#5 LSU
#8 Cal
#11 Florida
#13 Georgia

South Carolina and Bama are winable. The bowl game a toss-up. I still think 8-5 is pretty realistic, 10-3 best case scenario.

The one saving grace this year vs last year is that we get 3 out of 4 of those highly ranked teams at home.

If Cal is the number 8 team in the nation, that means there are no more than seven good teams in the country.

They do seem to be getting a LOT of respect for a team that had an average year last year and is going into this year with a new offense and not sure who is going to play QB.

Everyone is mesmerized by Jeff Tedford. Cal is a paper tiger. They'll be this year's version of Michigan from last year. An overhyped team that ends up in an irrelevant bowl with a mediocre record.

In hindsight . . . I would have taken that. :focus:

I need to update that and add #22 alabama.

As far as Cal being rated #8, consider the source. Mandell has never impressed me with his predictions, especially in football. He's wrong as much as he is right.

The team that I'm looking at to make a run is West Virginia. Maybe they're this year's Louisville, but after the way they beat up Georgia and the cupcake schedule they are playing, things seem to be setting up for them.

They'll lose at least one of the three road games against UCONN, Louisville, and Pitt.

Seems like West Virginia has been a perennial darkhorse pick since Major Harris was playing QB in the late 80s.

The problem for WVA as I see it is that they will not control their own destiny. They will have to hope that people in front of them loose.

UGA will have trouble in the secondary. Florida may have no running game. Cal and LSU will be huge tests. I think The UGA and UF games are very winable. I think we can match up against them very well. Especially UGA. With us having a solid secondary, and a good front four going up against a young QB, assuming Joe T loses the job to one fot he freshman, and young WR, I think we will be sending our LB's all day. Florida will be hurting up front too, plus no mention of a TB, once again, I think we send our LB's all day. I like ouor chances in those games better than Cal and LSU.
