I found a story on ESPN talking about how Tuttle was making an impact at DT before his injury.

Shy Tuttle's return -- date still uncertain -- key for Tennessee's def - SEC Blog- ESPN

Near the bottom of the article I saw this:

"Tuttle is part of a big group of Tennessee defensive linemen who missed all or part of spring practice -- a group that also included All-SEC defensive end Derek Barnett, Vickers, defensive end Corey Vereen and promising defensive end Kyle Phillips.

Those absences exposed one of the leading questions for Tennessee as it enters the 2016 season as an SEC East favorite: Do the Vols have enough defensive line depth to withstand injuries to key players?"

If he had said DT depth I could see where he was going but even without Shy we have a potential star in McKenzie, two SEC caliber players in Vickers and O'Brien, Kongbo as a situational DT, and Paul FREAKING Bain!

But at DE :yahoo: we are absolutely loaded. Barnett has shown over the past two years that hes one of the best players in the country. We have three other upper class men (LaTroy Lewis, Dimarya Mixon, and Cory Vereen) that have shown they are SEC caliber players. They didn't always have amazing numbers but it seemed like one of these guys stepped up in most games to give Barnett a hand.

After those four we have Kyle Phillips a 5 star who battled injury but showed his potential.

Austin Smith who played LB last year, he got good speed for his size. I think he will play a role similar to Curt Maggitt.

Darrell Taylor he red-shirted last year to put on weight. but every one raved about him in the spring. Due to the depth in front of him he'll probably only see playing time when we are up big. But I could be a special pass rusher if he can put on some more weight and keep his quickness.

Andrew Butcher he red-shirted last year due to injury in fall camp, but he probably would have anyway. He has made some bad choices in his time on campus, and alot of people have labeled him a bust. But I'm not ready to give up on him yet. If you haven't watched his HS film you need to. He was a Beast against some of the best competition in Atlanta. I doubt he plays much his season but when the four DE's I mentioned first are gone I think he'll be in the rotation.

and the best for last....

King Kongbo, hes a 5 star JC transfer from Arizona, but is originally from Africa. I would guess hes one of the most athletic people in the country. Right now hes reported to be 6'6'' 280lb.

I went from listing the depth chart to a small description of some of the Lesser known DE's lol. Hope you enjoyed !

Just think, we're just a few years away from hoping to have enough players to field a team, now the coaches have to worry about keeping all the stars playing minutes. Just shows how a bad decision or two can quickly lead to near disaster.

Yep. Gone are the days of starting a walk-on on the OL.

...forever, I hope.

UT has come a long way since CBJ has shown up, DL should be fine, but injuries have been an issue throughout the SEC, the other conference, not so much.......because they don't play anyone inside their on conference! and they suck!..........yes CFB is just around the corner and my alter ego is coming out.....let's KSB!

Go Vols!!!:rock::rock::rock::rock::rock:

I'm guessing you didn't intend that as a blanket statement.

Every once in a while you are going to have a walk-on, who for whatever reason, didn't go the scholarship route (late developer?, immigrant who didn't play much football? combat vet?) who has the talent and ability to start ahead of any scholarship player. It may be rare, but it does happen occasionally, and especially on the offensive line.

1) Butch Jones has coached his share. 2) There are currently 10 of them in the NFL. 3) Trevor Daniel 4) J.J. McClesky. Could go on.

"Walk on" is not a dirty word.

But do we still have shower discipline? That's supposed to be important.

Also now with the late addition of Mykelle McDaniel (6'4 255lb). DEs all over the place.

I remember the concerns about the 2016 DE class - no HS signees. Enter McDaniel!!!! Now we have a talented freshman DE who can redshirt and be ready for major snaps in 2017. He is an important addition. Glad he's aboard. :):):)

I never liked John Chavis and his propensity to run the Pre-vent defenses late in games but, for a few years in the mid to late nineties we had so many good Defensive linemen he would rotate about 10 of them constantly to keep them fresh. Tennessee won a lot of games because of that.

"shower discipline" as in showing up to take one every now and again or type of conduct while in there?

I hate to burst your star bubble but we only have 1, yes 1, 5* recruit on the current UT roster. That player is Khalil McKenzie.

The rest are either 2*, 3*, or 4* prospects. It does depend on what service that you use but 247 Sports is the ONLY truly reliable service to use for these rankings.

We have signed a 5* recruit for 2018 in Cade Mays but right now our current roster only has McKenzie as that only 5* recruit. Thanks!

Even going by 247 he is the conscious #1 JC player in the country. It's not his fault rivals (which he is rated a 5 star on) is the only recruiting service that even considers giving JC players a 5th star.

Jonathan Kongbo, Tennessee, Strong-Side Defensive End

I'm just saying 247 Sports is the source to use & not Rivals or Scout or any of the others either. Not saying they're bad services. They just don't have the best & updated information on these recruits.

I agree with op on everything. If we lose big games this year it won't be because of the dline.

I would challenge however, that most people aren't labeling Andrew butcher a bust. He's been in trouble one time for underage drinking. He would have likely redshirted with or without the injury. I fully expect him to be an absolute stud. He has one of the best hs highlight tapes you'll ever see. If he's fully healthy, he'll likely be in the same grouping as Taylor. He's going to get it done sooner rather than later

I'm not sure you worded that quite how you meant to, but I also look forward to Butcher getting on the field and showing what he can do.

There isn't a service that is "truly reliable".
