im a friend and big fan of heath and ive posted and defended him many times on here. i admired his style, poise, abuilty, and toughness he gave while he was at UT. A few people have compared Crompton to him for several reasons. Where hes from, size, etc. I was at a meeting with a guy just now and was discussing the 08 team and predicting etc as we all do. He was telling me that Jonathan used to mow Heath's grass. Well woopty doo. The next thing from this guys mouth was Heath taught him most of what Jon knows. Apparently growing up in the small community of Waynesville someone else looked up to him being a hometown hero. So we may see more and more similarities as the season goes on. It was also stated how we are in a ''rebuilding year'' allot like we were in 98' Its early and every week will tell a new story but does anyone else see the similarities in jon/heath and or 98' and 08? im almost too young to be able to remember the details of these issues can some veterans fill me in?

Shuler was pretty fast on his feet. I'm not sure if Crompton could keep up, but I could be wrong.

I was and always will be a Heath Shuler fan. He could have put up Tebow like numbers if he'd played in that system.

there was some talk on here i believe of why crompton didnt play when ainge hurt shoulder and pinky. said erik would start cryin if he didnt get to play his senior year or something. other said crompton just wasnt as good. others say cutcliff was goin to have him play reguardless cause erik was his ''project'' like peyton and eli. i read or heard it somewhere thats why it was said and prob didnt make sense. sorry

If Crompton was like Shuler, he would have started from day 1

Not if Fulmer and Cutcliffe are suffering from Manning Messiah Complex (MMC). They gave Erik Ainge more chances than anybody in the history of college football to live up to the promise of being the next Peyton. If 2005 LSU wasn't enough to bench that guy and have him quietly lurk away from Knoxville, there was nothing he could do wrong. There are very few quarterbacks that could have survived a debacle like that. The only reason he did is because he was 6'6", showed some flashes of brilliance against Florida in 2004, and they were desperate to enhance their resume by proclaiming they turned around a a quarterback that was mentally fragile and broken down (i.e. Cutcliffe when he returned in 2006).

Yeah, Fulmer and Cutcliffe making one player play better is the key to job security. Brilliant idea.

If you are a recently fired coach and have aspirations of coaching again someday, what better way to enhance your resume than to say "Not only did I coach Peyton and Eli, but I turned around a shell of a quarterback in Erik Ainge... a guy that would have been relegated to obscurity on 95% of the teams in Div I football after 2005..."

I'm sure Fulmer was cool with that. "Oh yeah, I just got off a 5-6 season, but do whatever you want."

Not to mention Cutcliffe was immediately hired by Charlie Weis. He wasn't going to have that hard of a time getting back into coaching. And Ainge being obscure on 95% of college teams is an even stupider idea than I'm used to seeing from you.

Nobody cares. Please get back on topic.

He got a job at Duke... and he wasn't even the first choice, or even the second choice if I remember correctly. He knew he had to do as much as he could during his time in Knoxville to build himself back up after getting dropped by Ole Miss. If he was such a hot commodity, he would not have settled for the Duke job.

Or maybe some people just put too much faith in an inexperienced/somewhat overhyped player.

I figured since you were going on and on and on and on and on about rebuilding Ainge that you were being sensible and saying that accomplishment would help him land a position coaching job or at best another OC job. I would imagine rebuilding an entire offense would be much more conducive to a head coaching job, but that's just me being logical. You may now continue to promote your idiotic theories. Volnation will continue to laugh at you.

That doesn't surprise me... considering how bad this staff had to coddle his ego.

Well, sense he didn't rebuild this offense, the only thing he had to hang his hat on was Eli, Peyton, and attempting to ressurect Ainge.

Your entire theory hinges on the idea that Cutcliffe tailored the offense to make Ainge look better than he really was in some sort of effort to reinforce his QB guru image. You can't even keep your own story straight.

Now your pulling stuff out of your sphincter... Where did you get this info?

Check out all the articles about Crompton finally taking his role seriously this season. There've been quite a few rumors that he didn't exactly have the best attitude for 2006-7.
