What did his leaving allow them to do to make them, in you're opinion, better than they could have been with him?

It allowed Phil Collins to sing and to me he was the better singer. Also Gabriel was all about a hippie act that made no sense to some Americans. For some reason Gabriel didn't have good songs with Genesis and he relied on a gimmick when he left they couldn't find a singer and Phil Collins said he could and the rest is History.

Both singers are good. One of the rare instances in rock history where a new vocalist steps in and there wasn't much of a drop off.
