Back up Inside Linebacker Cortez McDowell. He filled in very well for JRM after he was ejected in the first half and recorded 9 solo tackles.
He showed the depth that we have been hearing about even though he wasn't the first one spoken about when referring to this year's depth.

Well done Cortez !!

Cortez did have a big game and no offense to him when I say JRM would have probably had 15 tackles and would have put a stop to that quick reverse they ran a few times.

I also wonder if JRM would have been the cover guy for that TD play, where Vereen was expected to cover their receiver downfield. Probably not since they would have had Cortez on him if that was the case.

Will they keep McDowell on the outside and move JRM to the inside to have them on field at same time?

Cortez and Sapp are both playmakers with All-SEC potential that just happen to be stuck behind a great player in JRM. The drop-off from JRM to those guys has more to do with leadership and communication than talent. It's nice to know that JRM can take a break and there's a guy that can go in and play well.

Out of the many threads, this one is valuable. I had missed his efforts and appreciate that you brought them forward. It feel great to have some depth in key roles.

He's not an inside linebacker tho...neither is JRM.

2 silver linings from JRM's ejection:

1) We got to see that the world wouldn't end without him on the field. McDowell will continue to get better, but he filled in admirably in a crunch

2) The ejection was in the 1st half of the game, so he doesn't have to miss any of the next game.

What are you gonna do with Kirkland then? We're mainly in nickle and only play 2 linebackers. I don't think we're gonna sit DKJr.

Could Cortez be a better option when we go to the 4-3 as the other OLB instead of Bynum. From watching the game Bynum seemed in the right place but was too easily blocked and seemed a step slow when making a tackle. Could just be me being ornery but I just wanted to throw he option out there for volnation.

He was a 4 star guy coming out of high school, glad to see him live up to that rating, however brief of an opportunity it was. Makes me curious now to see Bates get in there. I know he played on special teams, maybe he'll get a chance against Ohio.

I think it would be interesting to see if , depending on offensive personnel groupings, we ran a base 43 that could become a nickel with JRM playing the role of the nickel defender. If I'm not mistaken he came here as a safety, and he has the skill set to cover receivers downfield. That would enable Sapp or Tez to play alongside Kirkland.

Sorry to be the guy that comes on a positive thread and turns it negative, but overall we have to get much better at linebacker to compete in league play. JRM will dominate at his position, but our other lb's were lack luster at best. McDowell and Kirkland Jr were out of position a lot. I don't think they understood the offensive concept they were facing. A big chunk of the tackles those two made were running down ball carriers that had already gained a chunk of yards. On a lot of plays, there were as much as two gaps off from where they should have been. That's the difference in a tackle at the line of scrimmage vs a tackle 5-7 yards down field. I would love to see how the defensive coaches graded them out for the week. Does anyone on here know if the coaches ever discuss grades with the media? I would love to see those if they do. D-line looks strong and the secondary played really well. Once our lb's get in form, we will be really strong on defense. Hopefully they will get it corrected this week in the film room!
