I guess my viewpoint stems from anecdotal evidence I have seen at (ironically enough...) Troy University... I grew up in Columbus Georgia not far away and it was always Troy State back then... The football program was nothing and the school was pretty much an afterthought, a place kids went who didn't get accepted by Auburn or Bama... The football program starts exploding and next thing you know the campus is buzzing with construction activity and quite a few nice new buildings are in place there now that I'm pretty sure were mainly financed through money briught in by the team... I could totally be off base here but it does seem mighty coincidental that Troy's growth into a destination university and the football teams rise to national conciousness went hand in hand... I realize that is not a fair comparison to a land grant university like Tennessee (which existed long before football was a word anybody in America spoke...).
Which is the big difference.
For a small school, any kind of recognition helps. At a place like Tennessee, it's not that big of a deal.
