Should UT take em on?

We should never be scared to play Boise freakin State. If we are where we should be as an SEC program, then we should beat them senseless even in their best years.

If you're worried about the money you might want to read one of my earlier blogs. This may sound naive but since when should college football be about money? It's about who can beat who's' butt. It's about bragging rights. In case you haven't heard money is the root of all evil. Money has already ruined sports enough. That's why a lot of people are against a playoff system in college football. They think if a small school from Nowhere, USA becomes the national champions, the big schools will lose money. Well if they do... if we do, we deserve to lose money. Just sounds like you're afraid we might get beat and you're using money as an excuse not to play. What's the difference in playing Boise St. or Western KY? A game is a game. Truth is, if we played pygmy Eskimos from Greenland, I got a feeling we'd still fill up the stadium. Most of us love our Volunteers, win or lose. Of course we like them to win but we'd be VOL fans if our state, our university, or our football program was broke. We'd still go to the games, we'd still watch on TV and we'd still buy and ware Tennessee VOLS caps. Patton Manning used to be great but now that he is charging $300.00 just to get his signature, he's just another greedy pro player and I wouldn't pay $300.00 to see him play in the Galactic Super Duper Bowl. The young men who play for the Univ. Of Tennessee are like our kids. We watched them play Pee Wee when their helmets were the biggest thing about them and they sometimes ran down the field in the wrong direction. We watched them play in middle and high school and we were proud when they went on to college to play. Doesn't matter where they're from, if they ware the orange and white, they're all "our kids". A pro player is just a grown man working as a entertainer and none of them are worth what they're getting payed. Like I said, money is ruining sports. You play the game for pride. You play the game for bragging rights. It's about supporting our kids and it doesn't matter if they go to a big school or a small one. For those of us who went to UT it's about loyalty. For the millions of fans across the state, it's about supporting the school our taxes help pay for. It's about those of us who worked hard so we could afford to send our children to the school that bares the name of our home. We are proud of the University of Tennessee and when we play other teams from other schools it's about sportsmanship and competition. It's not about the money. I'm glad we got a big football program but if our team had to practice in a cow field, I would still be just as proud of them. That's what it means to be a Volunteer. If all you care about is the money, go root for Exxon. If Boise St. has the balls to put out the challenge, we should have the pride and courage to answer them. Anybody, anywhere, anytime. BRING IT ON! We are the TENNESSEE VOLUNTEERS and we don't judge a team by the size of it's bank account. We're here to play FOOTBALL!

The day Idaho becomes a hotbed of high school football talent will be the day we take this game.[/QUOTE]

We are continuously trying to schedule tougher OOC opponents. We got series w/ Oregon and USC and OSU in our future for gods sake dont we? I say let the pansy ass scared Tigers/Bammers/Gators follow our scheduling and take them on we obviously aren't scared of scheduling tough OOC teams.

I would rather play a home and home with an ACC or Big 10 team. Either VT or Penn St. Beating VT would help recruiting eastern seaboard of Virginia. Penn St. northeast. Besides, would love to see the matchups, especially VT living in SWVA that's all I hear about.

Playing Boise, Oregon, Florida in a row?

Hellllllllllll no. That's asking for a loss.

Doesn't really do any good for us. Not really prime recruiting country. Plus, if you have seen our future schedules we are fully loaded with top teams- Oregon, Oklahoma, Nebraska, UNC, etc.

I think we have enough on our plate for now. Some of the teams we will be playing over the next several years are better than BS, and will benefit our recruiting far better than BS. Like stated above, let Florida or Bama replace their cupcakes with them.

Word around here is that they will play in the Mountain West in 2011, which will allow their stats for all 4 years to be counted in the BCS review that will occur in 2012, the idea being that they will be ranked ahead of the Big East and become a BCS conference (not replacing the Big East, but in addition to them).

We already play Kentucky, which is a bit of a creampuff game and gives us exposure to that not-so-crucial region for recruiting, so why do we schedule Western Kentucky for an important OOC spot? That does not help our SoS nor aid us in any other way. A stronger OOC opponent would be Louisville, which would strengthen our SoS and gain us support in the coaches polls and AP.

I don't like playing Ohio, either. What is the gain there, other than minor recruiting exposure? It hurts our SoS, which is more important for reaching the BCS game than is exposure to potential recruits. Better choices would be Purdue, Indiana, Michigan State, or Northwestern, which would put us squarely in Big-10 recruiting country and help our SoS immensely.

Wyoming is another puzzler. What do they give us that Boise State doesn't? How many star recruits are coming to UT out of Wyoming? No benefit to SoS, either. Instead of Wyoming, we should be playing BYU.

I love playing Cal and UCLA because I relish the chance of poking a big redneck stick in the eyes of those arrogant freaks...unfortunately I've gotten stung a few times lately. But when we win, we gain serious SoS points and exposure to west coast recruits. USC is significantly more of a challenge for an OOC game than any of the others I've mentioned, but I would love to see it on a regular basis. I would also like to see some teams from further north on the Pacific coast on our schedule, like UW or WSU.

In the end, I think UT ought to schedule only OOC teams from major conferences since hotshot recruits are drawn to those teams. No WAC teams, thank you. Only Big-Ten, PAC-10, Big-12, Big-East, and ACC teams. I am more interested in seeing big reputation teams come to Knoxville than I am creampuffs. It becomes a real measuring stick and unlike Notre Dame which is hampered by high academic standards, UT has the facilities and fanbase to pull in the very best players every year. There is no way we can't be two- or three-deep enough to take on much better OOC teams every season. That is why I watch them on TV and what I want to see.

So, regardless of the teams already on future schedules, what five OOC teams would you like to play? Here is my off-the-cuff list, in no particular order:

1. Miami (more Florida exposure never hurts)
2. Washington State
3. Missouri (or Kansas State)
4. Purdue (or Mich State)
5. Texas A&M (crucial Texas recruiting market)

As far as Boise State. It seems to me with the Mighty Ducks next year (and I really mean Mighty) here next year and a return trip there. Also, Oklahoma, Cinncinnati,
Ohio State and all these teams within the next few years
leads me to think we play a decent out of conference schedule. Seems like I am also leaving someone out.

With Kiffin's players fully within his system and with playing experience: meaning 2012-2013 I would like to see them come here, but with no return trip for us. That's what the Bearcats are doing; however, as long as we play them. beat their arses, and shut the talk down about Boise that seems to be there every year about this time, I would like to play them in an opening game here. There would be plenty of national attention on Tennessee vs. Boise State believe it or not.

i would love to see this as well. im northeast tenn, sisters hubby is from swva he wears that vt stuff and always tries to convince me TENN dont want any of them, of course that starts the debate. i would love to see it the teams are close in distance and would be a good rivalry game plus a boost for sos,but i do see too that we do have plenty of rivalry games just in conference. i can always hope we end up with them in a bowl game eventually tho.

More PAC 10 teams. We have royally sucked against them

sure y not with lane kiffin i'm not scared of playing anybody, i doubt boise is better than alabama although they could be but i don't think so. plus it isn't like they would sneak up on us that is when mid-majors get you in trouble. not that they are exactly a mid-major but u know what i mean. if everbody else is scared i don't care to do it who cares if we gain anything don't show any fear.

It was asked in the coach questions on the Lane Kiffin show and he said we play OOC teams based on the areas we try to focus recruiting in. He said he wasnt planning on takin any trips to Iowa soon lol....

Nope. Not with the current situation. If we win, we should have. If we lose we were out coached. Kinda like the AL bowl game last year.

UF, AL, USC and most of the best teams play powder puff out of conference schedules and are not punished for it. Basically college football does not allow for any throw away games. Until a playoff system is implemented I would steer clear of any of those Boise type of teams. If there was a playoff system I'd like to see a random computer pick of out of conference games for all college teams eligible for the championship.

Since when is Virginia Tech a powder puff?

Id be all for it! Heck yeah but IDK about next year with Oregon... That would be a tough schedule.

This is why it is a bad idea to take them up on this.

So you are saying you are afraid of the matchup??

Of course you are and that is total BS. If we expect to be the best team in the country we can't pick and choose our battles. We line them up and destroy them one game at a time to prove we are absolutely the best. Anything else is "positioning" and manipulating a lame system!!

A game with Boise St isn't going to happen. Coach Kiffin has already been asked about it and he said 1) our schedule is already full and 2) he wants to play in areas of the country that will help us in recruiting. Then he said he can't remember many recruits coming out of Idaho.

Merrill Hodge, London Fletcher, Seneca Wallace,...cmon. This thread is about playing anybody, anywhere...not Idaho talent...even though they punked mighty OU...kinda like Utah made Saban pause

Don't we have Oregon, Oklahoma, Nebraska and USC (among others) on our future schedule? Add in the (toughest conference in college football) SEC games and we have a pretty full plate without including Boise State. JMO

Much rather play USC or Oklahoma or Ohio St/Mich.

Gain much more from playing them than BSU. Even a close loss to USC would look better than beating Boise...
