Should The Vols Abandon The Pro-Style Offense?

Meyer On Gators' Up-Tempo Offense: 'It Could Be Lethal' - GatorZone.com

Before you all go off the deep end with the anti-gator comments, I think its a legit question. Dont focus on the source, but on the question. Is Dooley hurting the program by not be progressive in this circumstance? Would it help recruiting to change offenses? Look at the guys lining up to play for Malzahn.

We'll be fine with what we've got. I don't care about what Urban Cryer and Malzahn are doing. I'm worried about what Dooley and Tennessee are doing. :good!:

That run and shoot that Hawaii run was a great thing to watch when it worked. How hard would it be to change to a spread? and that not the Florida style or Oregon style I'm talking the Hawaii Texas Tech style with a very wide open passing game.

We ran 4 wide quite a bit against SC didn't we? The more teams start playing this crap as their base offense the better it is for us and Bama. Elite players (especially QBs and RBs) that want to play in the pros will have fewer and fewer options to get a head start on a pro career in a pro style system. Cam better learn how to catch. In the long run this will work to our advantage. Also the more teams run spread the more it thins the advantage. I was thinking about this earlier today at work. I really see this being huge to our recovery in the long run. JMO

It might be hard to recruit a good quarterback running Tech style. Most kids these days want to be NFL ready and the first Tech kid has yet to break through the barrier.

No, because almost everyone in the nation wants that type of player because they have gone to the spread. Once we have the type of players to fit our system then we will see how successful we will become. Like in 07,08 team we had pro-style and it worked! we can't just freak out and become like everyone else, especially if don't have those types of players like 08 season. Besides remember clawoffense spread need i say more. (Crompton has 3 OC's and we wonder why he sucked at first and was pro-set up and down)

Say what?

If Tebow can get a shot in the NFL, so can Cam Newton.

Touche. But call me when actually does something. He probably will end up getting a real shot at playing time...at fullback. I say he will never have a career at QB. And also say this, Cam is way better than Tebow so maybe he does do okay at QB in the pros, but probably like Vince Young he won't ever be a really good Pro QB.

IIRC it was 93 we scored 42+ points a game with a "boring, unimaginative pro style offense". It's all about the players baby. I'm not going to even bring up the Peyton era.

Vince Young currently leads the NFL in passer rating. I'd say that is a really good pro QB.

Did not know that. That's interesting. How come none of the heads talk about that much? He is never brought up when they talk about the NFLs best QBS.

I think we can still win with pro style, but I'm not totally opposed to change.

I don't like spread offenses, but if it works I'll learn to love it.

Well Alabama has run the pro style for years and stunk it up before Saban got there...We are about to have our third losing season running it...I feel change can do some good

Yeah, they weren't executing on offense before Saban got there.

The problem isn't scheme.

That's not a definite measure of a good QB. That would have made Chris Todd a better QB than Andrew Luck last year. And Jordan Jefferson better than Matt Barkley.

This year it would have made Tyrod Taylor and Terrelle Pryor better than Mallett and Luck.

Yes, but we wont because people hate change and are stuck in the past!

Got 14?

Say that to yourself a couple times. Then reconsider what you just said.

Only six are legit though :)

I despise Alabama. I also despise those that think running a spread is a cure all for the shape Tennessee football is in.

Yes. Vols need Chad Cunningham as QB in a run-and-gun. He's got the moves and the stats for average gain from scrimmage. He's a blaze and knows how to get out of bounds like a smart QB.
