In light of Jalen Reeves-Maybin getting ejected from the Appy State game for targeting should the Vols rethink using starters on kick and other special teams?

I think with the talent at the level it is, and with 85 scholarship players, it's not necessary, except returners. Jmo..

Rethink having the best special teams because of a call that could happen at any time? Solid idea

All last year we bragged about our special teams. We lose a starter for a game due to targeting and we want to pull starters off special teams?

It is a question meant to be food for thought regarding losing starters from penalties or injuries using other team players as opposed to having a somewhat elevated special team unit, 12th man if you will. Don't have to be a smartass to discuss the question.

I know what it was meant to be and treated your thread with all the respect it deserved. You should treat my post with the same instead of just being a butthurt little squirrel.

Quite a few seem to agree with this assessment

So you fall on the side of not using starters on special teams. If not, you're the one that is still the smartass. By the way, I thought the term butthurt was not allowed on this site.

So you are saying don't use starters because they are stupid?

No, we should continue to have the best special teams in the country. If that includes starters then it is well worth the tiny risk

That's ridiculous. Who made up that nonsense?

I remember 2 years ago vs Utah state saying during the kickoff "why is Aj Johnson playing special teams?" Then he caused a fumble.

I wouldn't just because starters are too valuable to lose on a special teams play. We were lucky we didn't need him against Appy St but if that were to happen against an SEC team they would be running all over us. Let the backups get the experience. That is how JRM got his opportunity to begin with. Let someone else do it.

We had one WR last year who was a beast on special teams logging several serious tackles on opposing punt / kick returners. We used to joke about our WRs hitting harder than other team's DBs. He was big enough and strong enough and well-coached enough that it would have been silly not to have him in for kickoffs and punts.

I've always thought it made sense to put your best guys on the field for every play - offense, defense, and special teams.

No, but I think Evan Berry should be our PR. I've said this before the muffed punt by Cam. For two reasons.

1. I want the ball in EB's hands as much as possible.

2. I don't want Cam getting hurt returning kicks.

Jennings, Gaulden, Martin, Warrior, Sapp, Byrd, even Berry, all fast players that should be on routine punt coverage. JRM should only be on punt coverage if it's late in the game with the season on the line. Not in the first quarter against a mid major. JRM is the quarterback of the defense. Should Dobbs be returning punts?

If you can't see that it was obvious that UT's defense was crippled with the loss of JRM then I don't know what else to say.

The JRM hit and ejection would have literally been impossible to prevent. The bum didn't fair catch the ball. what else was JRM suppose to do, let him have a second and bust a move and get into open space? Nooooo. And the dude lowered while he was catching the ball. Now maybe if JRM is like Adam sander in Click and able to pause life and move his head to where it's pointed at the dudes chest then I could see a dilemma. But there was absolutely no way for JRM to prevent that from happening. That would have happened to anyone in the country.

What if instead of the ejection he was injured and missed the next 2 months? Is lowering the chances of a return for a TD by five to ten percent worth losing the leader of the defense?

Wouldn't have happened if he wasn't running on special teams.
