I'm reading a lot of stuff on Robert Meachem and it seems like its been more negative than positive... on just about every scouting report it says that he has good hands and can make a big play, but what reciever in the NFL cant do that?... at the same time the reports also seem to all state that he is not a good route runner, not very physical, bad concentration which causes a lot of dropped balls, not good technique, not a good blocker, and some say that he hasnt mastered the art of his nuances... now i know Meach had a great year this past season and he is a big receiver who can probably make an impact at the next level, but i couldnt help but think that he could have had a monster season this year if he had stayed and worked on all of those weaknesses and probably even increased his position for next years draft.. i may be on my own on this but i really dont think Meach is ready for the NFL because his weaknesses seem to be all the qualities of a productive receiver at the next level...

If he wanted money he went at the right time. Like a baseball player in his free agent year he went off. Didn't show any strides from Freshman to Soph and went off one year. He cashed in.

If he stays another year more flaws would have been discovered or maybe his proneness to injury. Economically speaking, this was the perfect time for Meachem to go. Football speaking, maybe not, another year would have helped but also gave the NFL a reason to pass.

I imagine the staff of the Saints will be able to prepare Meachem for the NFL better than any coach at UT could. They aren't just going to toss out their first round pick if he can't contribute right away.

True . . . It's the Falcons that are especially adept at drafting WR busts in the 1st round.

The only thing that concerned me about Meachem was the fact that he didn't show up in a couple of games. Against Arkansas he was shut down completely by one guy, and then against Penn St. he simply didn't show up at all, granted the rest of the didn't either. He has to learn to play at the same level consistently.

Tough to put that one all on Meachem with us running a freshman QB out there.

Meachem still had 65 yards and a TD. That's not exactly terrible. Those numbers are as good as about half the games Sidney Rice played in last season.

I can't remember that CB's name for Arkansas, but he was just more physical than Meachem and never let him get on his route. That Penn St. game, I don't know what happened, he just didn't show.

You're talking about Chris Houston, one of the highest rated DBs in last years draft. In the Penn State game, no one on the offense showed up.

Before the draft I thought he should have stayed because I didn't anticipate him being a first round selection. He ended up barely making it in the first round which all you can ask for I guess. Had he stayed for his senior year, I think he would have been first wr taken in the 08 draft. But I think it worked out well enough for him. I was glad to see him go to a team that has a ton of upside.

I understand that he has a daughter and probably needed the money, but in the grand scheme of things, what's one more year? He survived for this long. Without truly understanding his whole situation, I think he should have stayed. However, I can't really blame him for going either.

It's over now though and he's gone. Time to move on.

Meach dealt with injuries his first few years... had one very good season ... predicted to be a 1st round pick ... has to support a child.. would have been double teamed = He made the right business decision

Yes, he could have lost weight and got in shape.

Meachem is freakishly athletic. He'll have no problem being in playing shape. Meachem staying one more year would have been too big a risk. The UT offense has far too many questions next year. The odds of him having a performance similar to his 2006 campaign weren't good.

meach definitely made the right decision in leaving. would i do almost anything to have him back for his senior year, yes, but this will benefit him by going early
