I would absolutely consider Quarles. The guy is a proven winner, a winner with less talent much of the time - which means his schemes work, and the players love to play for him - which tells me he would likely also be very good at recruiting.

What is your issue with CGQ? He coaches in the highest classification in TN, he has to play WB and HHS but he also has to play the biggest schools in the state.

I don't have a problem with him. He's a good high school coach, but like others have said he probably needs college experience as a position coach, or grad assistant first.

I am not trying to be negative here, but what is it with the East TN contingent sometimes. You think that any kid that plays in East TN and grew up a Vol fan should be on the team. He is always great because he is from East TN. I saw in the talk about Ford yesterday that CBJ would never get ride of local kids, he should always drop out of states kids and keep kids like Bruce. I do not give a rats azz if Bruce is local or not. I do not care if there is one single local kid on the team. I want to win games and if the team is comprised of kids from Cali, or Ga, or where ever I do not care.

Now, I realize this guy is a good HS coach, but really you want to risk the future of our beloved Vols on an unproven high school coach. He has never coached one game as a position coach in college and some of you think he is ready to be OC at an SEC football team, at the time I voted 19 of the previous voters did. Common now you all be real here, just because he is from East TN does not qualify him for the job.

I'm sure some posters have a very good knowledge of Quarles coaching ability, I just wonder if Quarles is ready and worthy of the position of OC at UT?

This is a crazy OP. Why would BJ do such a stupid thing. HS does not equate to SEC level of coaching. Might as well hire Donald Duck. What makes any of you think this is a good idea?

Really does make me wonder if Jerry from Bulls Gap posts here.

The option has worked at Georgia Tech and would work well at UT with Dobbs and Hurd

No offense Dave, but it hasn't. No big time player wants to come play in that gimmicky offense. More times than not GT will lose to an opponent who has a bye week or bowl preparation to get ready for that triple option. I like you, but no.

Amazing stuff here. This would almost be as smart as hiring a coach from the Ragin' Caguns becuase of this last name. That turned out really well.

A HS school coach that runs the option?

I just came to the conclusion that football (possibly all sports) is like religion and politics. A topic that everyone thinks they know or understand, but in reality they have no clue.

It can work(the option) and that's not the offense that was run at Maryville High School.

Gus Malzahn thinks you've got to be an idiot to hire a high school coach as a collegiate offensive coordinator.

Fair enough, but honestly why would UT want Quarles?

Malzahn (a likely statistical outlier) landed at Arknasas by bringing top recruits... and it is Arkansas. GQ would not be doing this and UT is not Arkansas.

What does Quarles offer? He is completely unproven at the collegiate level. He has no experience in game planning against top flight SEC coaches (some of which have coached in the NFL). Game planning against Saban, Kirby Smart, Muschamp, etc. is substantially different than facing local high schools.

Not to mention, other schools get to recruit their own players too unlike just Maryville and Alcoa.

Now if UT hires him, recognize you will likely piss off your current offensive staff by bringing in a high school coach to a high profile position. I'm sure the staff would prefer continuity in a rising ZA over an outsider.

But what am I saying, I'm a Gator fan so by all means hire GQ.

Wow, you got one successful option that only got a shot because he was "homegrown" and was bringing a high profile player to a desperate program.

Name another that jumped straight from HS to OC that was successful.

I'll wait.

Here's my take: Quarles said he'll take the job if he can bring Dylan Jackson. That's why we dropped Ford.

I'm joking btw
